Dynamic Handling Package - Worth It?

Dynamic Handeling Package - Worth It?
$2700
Adaptive Drive
Combines performance-elevating Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) and ride-enhancing Dynamic Damping Control (DDC). With ARS, active stabilizers at the front and rear axles significantly reduce body roll.
* Forces you to get the sport package which is an additional $2200

Plus you want Integral Active Steering for even more handling goodness.

Yeah throw $1750 into the pot while you're at it. 70k for the car you want, seems a bit much, for a mid size sedan.

so how is this car going to drive without all this...ie. as a base car. As tight as my '09 328i sedan with 6MT and sport package?

Best review of the car I have seen yet. Instead of just crapping sunshine which most magazines have been doing; this reviewer gives you the heads and tails of what the new 5 is all about.

Well, he says (youtube Jan 2010) it's not the instant class leading car and not the runaway best car in its class, but is it the best car in its class? He also did not make clear what suspension the test f10 had - standard, sport, or with adaptive drive? Did he have a written review in Autocar and if so, did he elaborate on these points?

His written review also in Jan 2010 is found in http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/...30d-SE/246781/ where he wrote that it's still the best car in its class

Did he update his review in Autocar?

I think the days of canned BMW builds are over at least for this generation. Embrace the fact that you have more ability to individualize your BMW today. Everyone should determine HOW they are REALLY going to use the car and build it to match it. There really are NO bad builds if you build it the way you will use it.

Problem is ... some people build cars that they wish they would use but dont OR they build cars they think they should but really will not what they need.

Just my 2cents not much value to it I know ...

Mid-size? This is a 2-ton car. They don't really come any bigger, except Maybach-size.

This is midsize for America. You can get into technicals about how the EPA rates small/midsize or large (the 5 is midsize a Honda Accord Sedan is large). But in most consumers minds 3 is small, the 5 is midsize and the 7 is large.

Valid points, but I think the crucial point of his review is that it's not the run away leader, that the other cars in this segment have narrowed the gap. It's still the best but by a narrower margin. It's the duality of the car that will make some happy and others less so. More legroom in the back, good....Longer, heavier;bad. I think most will the agree the styling is better then the E60. Albeit conservative, it's a sedan, and it's a $50-70k car, which means the demographic that can afford such a thing will lean that way.

Having had my car for just over a week now.. I'm beginning to regret (just a smidge) not ordering from new and getting adaptive suspension.

I have the 530d with 20inch rims. Visibility pack, Dynamic pack, Media pack pro.

Im finding a couple of things different from my E60 M sport on 19inch rims.

1. I find when accelerating hard, if I drive over anything other than smooth tarmac, the feeling through the front wheels when they hit a rough surface really is quite bumpy and loud.. so much so I have to ease of the acceleration. This could be due to the rims, not sure.

2. I've had a couple of times when i've experienced what can only be described as "side ways drift", on uneven camber. Don't get me wrong. I'm not pushing the car hard, but there is a road I drive regularly to work that does have uneven surface on a round-a-bout, each and every day the back end seems to drift slightly at this point.

3. When committing to a corner, the steering isn't giving in my opinion enough feedback and I find myself compensating for poor feedback by correcting the steering.

I was fortunate to loan a 730d the other day which did have the adaptive suspension on it and I drove that all day with zero issues.. so I'm confident that this above issues are related to the lack of adaptive suspension.. you may tell me different..

Thanks for your sincere post Are your 20s run flat? And what wheels for the 730d?

I have drive 550i and 535i with dynamic handling package and it is worth every cent. I have also driven the 535i without the dynamic handling package and for me it was unacceptable.

Yes its worth it. The dynamic handling package is essentially (granted an improve version!) the active roll stabilization that was part of the sports package on the E60. The sports package as offered on the F10 is really just cosmetic...

I have had my new fully loaded 550i for 3 days driving on the Autobahn after doing BMW European Delivery. It is a fine car except it is not up to past BMW standards. IMO the review is unfortunately very accurate. The design is bland and very conservative. My 08 550 looks more advanced than the F10. The car clearly does not handle as well as my E60 with the M-Sport Package. The F10 does not feel taunt and athletic in terms of handling and ride. The steering is bit mushy for my taste. It is a very comfortable car. IMO opinion it is more comfortable than the E-Class. I buy BMW's for performance not comfort. It is not taunt and fun to drive like my previous 3 5 Series cars. It is not rock solid and quiet at high speed on the Autobahn. With the Dynamic Handling Package I have no idea why BMW include a Comfort setting. The car wallows like a boat in a lake when in the Comfort Mode. It just sways all over the place. It is obscene to have that goofy setting on a BMW. I admire BMW as a company and they have always treated me well so I will tolerate my new 550i although I can't help but be disappointed. I am sure that the car will sell well because it now has more mass appeal. Unfortunately it is now a comfortable, bland car in terms of driving and design. It does not have the sporty, taunt feel that I have enjoyed so much with my prior 3 5 Series BMW's.

It's posts like this one that make me nervous.

My wife's 550i is at Bremmerhaven waiting for the next ship and the clock is ticking away on the E60 M5 lease. Although we were very comfortable with the idea of letting the E60 go and my wife is in love with the F10 I'm really starting to have second thoughts.

The buyout deal on the E60 is insanely good and I wonder if 6 months down the road we'll kick ourselves for letting it go. It's been a phenomenally reliable and fun car...

On the other hand this will be her car and decision so I have to respect her choice.

Ugghh....

AMP, why would you get nervous over one post when the overwhelming majority of folks love the car? While I tend to agree on the "comfort setting" being a mode that you would not cruise around in all day, I can see it being used on relaxing highway drives or on really bumpy roads (as we have in northern climates).

@AMP, don't get nervous, you don't need to. The car is great, also in bends, it still is a BMW with a great chassis. The steering though you have to get used to and takes a few weeks a few 1000kms even if you are used to drive BMW's. But it is a great car to toss around as VBH says:

Nervous mostly because of my test drive experiences coming out of the M5 (and the M3).

I'm also getting pretty bummed about returning the M5 in a couple of weeks. It's been a near-perfect car (save for the typical M5 quirks) and I hate to abandon it like that.

(No children so the cars end up filling that role )

that sucks. you just spent 70k on a car and not entirely happy. what is your plan now? are you gonna sell it and get the new m5 when it comes out since you want a sportier car?

sorry to hear that Paul.
I know how excited you were.
