Punctured RFT - replace pair or all?
Hi guys,
Sunny Sunday day, just reached the highway and got a check control message - pulled over, and my front right tire was down to 1.35 bars - sure enough I found a big screw right, smack in the middle of it I was only 5 kms from home so I used the compressor to bring it back to pressure and safely got home - no worries. Now, my dilemma is whether to replace just the fronts or also the rears. I have: Fronts: 245/45 R18 Rears: 275/40 R18 All Continental RFTs which I am actually quite happy with and will buy the same. Tires are about 4 year old (DOT 06/11) - fronts still have (or rather had) 5 mm of thread and the rears 4.5-5mm. I didn't plan to change tires until they reached about 3mm, but that's life. What is the general recommendations for RWDs in this regard? Would it be OK to swap only the fronts and change the rears once they reach 3mm or is it better/safer to change rears as well too? Manual says nothing in this regard... Many thanks! |

If it's patchable I'd do that, you just lose your speed rating, but how often do you drive over 120 mph? If you do, swap the tires out in a pair or just replace them all and sell them to someone who need tires, but lacks funds for a whole set.

I had a flat on rear of my car, patch was in center of tire. Used them for 3k miles before I bought a new set of rear tires. So now run flats in front, regular in rear. Going to replace front with regular all season Michelin brand. You should not have any problems at all if patch is done correctly.
