Contemplating Engine Swap want to keep luxury features

So if I decide to do a really stupid engine swap what are the chances I will be able to keep everything in the interior functioning? Hint: Engine is not a BMW engine.

How much money and time do you have?

Hint; you'll need copious amounts of both.

Ok well I have narrowed it all the way down to just windows, radio and Ac. Also will steering rack be a problem. And can anyone for see me having any other issues mechanically? Plan on running another battery for the stand alone system for the engine.

Won't it affect traction control, dynamic stability and ABS? I'm guessing you aren't using stock DME.

IMHO, run away. Get a used BMW motor from a boneyard instead.

Good luck.

There’s a few ways you can do an engine swap like this

1. “Race Car” style (which is the simplest)
This would be the least integrated method. The drivetrain and its ecu would be dropped into the chassis. You’d need some sort of aftermarket gauge cluster that supports the drivetrain and then just deal with everything not working. That includes your keys, dsc/abs and likely your HVAC. You’d have to run some sort of switch panel to control power on, engine crank, etc...

2. Semi integrated
You’d have to start with a CAN BUS analyzer and “sniff” the current network. This will provide you with all the communications taking between the modules in your car. You’d have to document all the back and forth calls that take place in order to make every module happy. From there you’d likely need to obtain some sort of can bus interface to manage the communication on the network between the engine and the car. You’d have to map all the correct communication that takes place between the ecu and the car to allow things like the gauge cluster to work correctly and ensure all the other modules are “happy”. You’d still have to use a switch panel in this situation as you’d have no keys due to a lack of integration with the CAS and you might be able to get basic ABS functionality, but I doubt you’d get any sort of DSC/stability control to work ( Basic traction control could be done through an aftermarket ecu)

3. Kinda fully integrated
This would be everything from above but somehow getting your keys to work. The first hurdle would be just making the car want to run the starter. In order for that to happen I would think the factory DME would need to be incorporated. How it works from the factory for the car to command the starter to run is that the ISN (which is basically a password) needs to match between the keys, cas and dme. If one of those is missing the starter won’t run (or won’t be commanded to run). I also don’t know if the DME would need to see some of the engine outputs (like a crank signal) for it to “start”. If it did, you would need to feed that data to the DME. I still don’t know if you’d ever get the stability control to fully work as one of the tools it uses is to reduce engine output.

That’s just some of what I can think of based off the little I know. There’s probably way more I’m not even aware of.

Honestly if you tried option 2 or 3 I can bet you’ll likely give up before it ever got close to being finished (at least I can see that happening to me). Just buy an M5 or another car if you want to go faster lol

Good luck. The electronics will not play well together.
