Broken wiring loom

Had a problem with my 15 month old F10 about 2 months ago where the alarm continually sounded whilst I was driving ( very embarrassing when the dealer is 30 miles away in cardiff city centre). The dealer firstly removed the sounder so I could keep driving and then replaced it a few days later. Last week the same thing happened, they removed the sounder again and on Monday I took it back in for them to get to the bottom of it and repair it.

Had a call from the dealer this afternoon, saying they had finally found the fault, a break in the main wiring loom where it passes through one of the bulkheads in the body....the problem is, to repair it they will have to replace the whole loom, so they're looking at a major job they tell me costing thousands. Therefore they have rang BMW for advice on what to do next, we are now awaiting BMW's answer in the morning.......

I had the same problem with mine, it was a short-circuit under the rear bumper. Warranty.

Did they replace the full loom or just patch it up?

Still under warranty so no problems there but dealer mentioned that BmW may choose to give me a new car? Seemed a bit over the top?

Probably so they can learn about how such a defect slipped through QA at production. Plus I am sure it's a big deal if a large part of the car needs to be taken apart.

Well, I did not ask, but I delivered it one morning to the shop since the alarm was going off all the time, also when driving, just like you (believe me, it was no fun getting stuck in traffic jam with the alarm sounding).

Later that day he called me and said it was a shortcircuit under the rear bumper, I believe the right side, and it will be ready tomorrow. He did not mention anything that it was a complicated "operation". I think he said some wire was rubbing against something and the isolation was worn off.

But it literally sounds like we had the same problem.

Been informed today that BMW have approved the repairs rather than a swap, so the dealer has advised me they'll need the car for another 2 weeks whilst they do the work to replace the wiring loom.

Just been advised that my car is ready for collection after the part arrived from Germany yesterday afternoon, so they obviously haven't replaced the wiring loom but patched something up by the sound of it. Either way I'm just happy to get my car back.

Well picked my car up this afternoon, everything seems Ok. So nice to be back in my own car, had a 320d M sport as a loaner, very nice but no F10. Fingers crossed that's the end of it now and my remaining 20 months of ownership are now trouble free.
