Diesel Owners - Exhaust Fluid Range?
Folks -- just picked up my 535d xDrive over the weekend and absoultely loving it. Still breaking it in (116 miles only), so can't fully comment on the difference in performance between this car and my 2011 535i xDrive, but so far, no issues.
I'm not sure if I have a down-level software version or what, but in the Owner's manual, (p. 203), there's a reference that we can check the amount of diesel exhaust fluid remaining in the Control Display under "Vehicle Info, Vehicle Status, Diesel Exhaust Fluid." I tried to access this information last night, but it doesn't exist on my system -- there's no option to display Diesel Exhaust Fluid level. Is anyone else able to access this information?

It's probably AdBlue. It's urine from Pigs btw. It has been used by large trucks in Europe for many years to get rid of Nox emissions.
I guess you don't have it on US spec cars. I am quite sure there should be a blue lid where you fill diesel if you have it. |

No, I have the blue lid/tank for the additive, what I'm asking is on the Control Display, can anyone access the menu item under Vehicle Info that indicates how much is left in the tank? Manual says it should be there, but it's not on my car.

US cars definitely have the urea system -- even the 4-cylinder diesel that I believe doesn't necessarily have it in other markets.

Is anyone from the US able to see this? (or even tried?) I would hate it if this was one of those "country-specific" options and customers in the US get zero visibility to this information. I know we're supposed to get 10,000 miles per refill, but there's a disclaimer that at temps under 32F that consumption could be faster, so with winter on the horizon in New York.... .

Just to share some knowledge that circulates the forums every so often.. the Urea Fluid, AdBlue, or Diesel Exhaust Fluid can be purchased at VW, or even at Walmart for significantly less than what the BMW / Benz / Audi dealerships would sell for.

DEF fluid levels in the 535d
Hi folks, newby here from Canada. I recently bought a 2014 535d and I too am unable to determine the amount of DEF fluid remaining in vehicle even though the manual gives explicit instructions on how to do that. My dealer has checked several other cars and all have the same issue. BMW needs to update the software to allow this check to be made.
Still on the topic of DEF, in addition to monitoring the QUANTITY, the car also monitors the QUALITY of the DEF. If for any reason, the computer decides the DEF is the "Incorrect exhaust fluid" the computer puts the car into a 200 mile limit with NO RESTART when the counter hits 0 miles. You are required to seek BMW service within that mileage limit. This happened to me in central California with less than 2000 miles on the car. Cost me a 2 day lay-over to get it fixed. |
