Remote start and USB video playback
Hey guys. I have a 2012 f10 build date is 9/2011. I was wondering is it possible to install a remote starter in this car? Also what must I do to attain USB video playback? I have navigation with cic. Would I need an upgraded cic or nbt system? Or is it just a matter of coding the car

Remote Start would have to be installed as an aftermarket item. BMW does not offer this feature, even on new vehicles.
As far as In motion DVD viewing, it would either have to be coded. Or you can do a search for an in car motion dvd, that can code it for you. |

My understanding was that there is no aftermarket remote start, either, compatible with the F10. I may be wrong about this so check it out.
The ConnectedDrive "My BMW Remote" app offers the ability to activate the ventilation system remotely, but that's not going to start the car - just start moving the air... mainly helpful on a hot day where you're cooling it down. I don't think Germans believe in remote start.

I say Germans don't believe in it because it's technically not recommended to let your car idle. From a "green" perspective it's not good for the environment. But more importantly, from a mechanical perspective, my understanding is that it's not healthy for the engine. I believe the explanation is something like follows - after long periods of time (such as sitting overnight), the engine oil falls from the top of the engine to settle mainly at the bottom, and much of the delivery system can run dry. When you start the car and let it idle, the oil pump is usually not putting out the type of pressure that it would if the car was running at higher RPMs, so you're not getting good and uniform oil delivery to the engine, which causes excess wear. BMW usually suggests driving away shortly after starting the car and not letting it "idle" to warm up. My suspicion is that this is mainly regarding wear on the engine versus being a green or activist position. But admittedly, I'm not an expert here - this is just my understanding of why BMW, and other manufacturers, don't recommend allowing a cold engine to idle. Remote start, as such, is then directly in conflict with that advice. Now, many people let their car idle to warm up... so how much concern is there to this? I don't know - maybe not much. But I've always followed this advice and literally just started the car and drove off. It heats up really quickly (especially now with this monster V8 engine), so that much seems to diminish the need for remote start.

Re: usb video, it will only work on the nbt models (2013+). Nbt supports the common video formats (eg avi, mp4, wmv) but will need to be coded to enable video in motion and vcd/xvid codecs.

Trust me, it will likely never be offered by BMW. They are very green and have to meet efficiency standards that don't give them the luxury of offering it. That is the very reason cars are starting to all have Stop/Start, Turbos, 8 speed transmissions, etc. |

BMW does offer an auto start solution (sort of), if you have the remote key app on your iphone depending on your model some support an option called climate precondition.

iPhone app/Climate Recondition
I have a 2014 535i from the USA and an iPhone. I can't find out how to make the air circulation start from the App even though the Demo showed that it should do it. Do I need the App from Germany? Ideas?

You can get a remote start. One key has to stay in the car at all time and one always with you. This comes from a professional installer. I was going to do that but then leave a key in the car not so safe!
