Anyone installed the factory mudflaps?
I have a GT scheduled for delivery in Munich late April. Where I live, we tend to use a lot of sand and gravel on the roads in the winter. I generally opt for the factory mudflaps, but haven't (yet?) ordered them from the factory (don't know if they will do it or have the dealer install once I get it back to the USA?). But, was wondering if anyone has them, and how well they work at keeping crud off the paintwork behind the wheels. If you were able to buy them from the factory, what was the cost? It appears they may need to be painted, if you don't like the base coat (?). The price implies installation is extra cost.

I had them installed. Dealer charged me 1 hr labor to install, as there are brackets that need to be fitted for the flaps to attach.
So far this winter, they (up front) do a decent job in lessening the wheel spray onto the sides and prevent snow from builing up beneath the side sills. The rear ones are a bit longer than the fronts, and help reduce how quickly the rear trunk area gets dirty. As a bonus, the flaps help to visually lower the car and give a more aggressive stance in the rear. |

I'm handy, and retired, so I think I'll try it myself. I'll have to look, but it appeared they were body color on the website...maybe it was just on a black car...I don't remember. That would save some cost if you didn't have to paint them, but I think they might look better body color.

Did you do the installation yourself and if so do you need to remove the wheeels?

self install and no, did not remove wheel. however if you can indeed remove the wheel, it will be miles easier!
for the front, all you have to do is to turn the steering to one side so that the wheel is out of the way and give you some access. For the rear, there is enough space to just screw it on. you will need an angle screw driver. you won't have speace for automatic screw driver so be prepared to screw things in manually. you will also need to remove a hex bolt, or whatever you call those things, then put it back on with the mudflap in place. no need to drill holes, you will be using existing holes as well as a few new ones where the screws put a hole for you. |

Great thanks for the response... I think I will invest in a set and hope they keep a little of the muck of the sides and back of the car!

ello888: Can you post a few photos taken from farther away, so that your entire vehicle is pictured with the mudflaps installed, not just the tires?

There's a rear-quarter view on the BMW website that may help http://accessories.bmwusa.com/ItemVi...=portbnavimage
As someone noted, they ar flexible rubber, and are unlikely to hold paint, so you get the stock 'black' rubber which may or may not blend in (course, generally, the tires are black, too!). |

IInstalled Them
The rear's are a little more tricky on the right side than the left side.
Do the left side first! You make have to drill the black plastic splash guard so that the mudflat fits better. i did the fronts too. They are easier. use a 3/16" drill bit if you don't have the 5 mm drill bit to drill through plastic. ream the hole slightly. They are very professionally designed and look fine. Tasmanian |

I did my own. $200 CDN from dealer but they wanted extra 2 hrs to install so I declined. They are flat black but my info said they could be painted. I declined to paint. No brackets to install but each mudflap is a two piece pre construct that takes extra time. The install was easy enough and no wheel removal.
A quote from the owners manual from my 1973 2002 "the discerning bmw driver always install mudflaps for the benefit of all the vehicles that are overtaken" |

I installed my own and have the instructions. These state that they are supplied with a primer finish and so must be painted, but mine weren't and have been left black which goes just fine with silver body colour.
They have double sided tape pre applied to the edges, but I did not remove the protective strip as semi permamnt fixing would make access to the wheelarch liner difficult. At the front, existing push rivets are supposed to be discarded in favour of longer ones on the wing/fender edge. To secure the inner edge, cuts in the wheelarch liner are supposed to made, for metal clips and screws. However this will let water behind the liner, the clips will rust, and the liner weakened, so I drilled the liner instead, and used those discarded push rivets instead, and this has all worked fine. |
