Quick question...
On the F10 configurator here in the UK, the TPMS is a £250 optional extra. These leads me to 2 questions:
1) How does it work? Owning an E90, the system is standard equipment but works off the rotation of the wheels - no actual tyre pressure monitoring system. Does the TPMS option on the 5 work in the same way or are you paying for real sensors? (which would be best IMO). 2) Do I need it? The (potentially) future 5 Series would be on about 28,000miles per year and mostly motorway. However, going to an industrial estate almost every day and onto other sites ranging from nuclear power plants to scrap yards does (from experience) allow lots of screws and nails to be picked up in the tyres. The current "rotation system" does pick up when a tyre loses pressure. The pressures are checked at least every 2 weeks. Should be standard on a £40k plus car!!! Along with the £30 interior 12v power sockets. Don't get me started!

The TPMS uses real sensors.
Infinitely more accurate and less prone to false warnings than the FTM method. I would consider wheel and tire insurance from BMW. BMW does not recommend fixing run flats. A few flats can add up right quick. Quote:

These were two long questions, but here's a quick answer anyway:

I ordered the TPMS for my F10 by mistake... (I thought it would just be a flat tyre monitoring system, due to the complexities of our company ordering system) and I'm extremely glad that I did! (Come to think of it, the BMW website configurator and the brochure didn't give any help about what it really was. You'd have thought a picture of the display would help! :roll eyes
I've found that it's as accurate as my other gauges (which I only used for double checking initially - they won't be used much, if at all, from now on) and it's very reassuring to have it available at any time. The lovely display very much impresses drivers of lesser cars too! |

Okay so this leads me to two more: 3) If I do not tick the TPMS option box, do I still get the FTM one as standard I have at the moment on the E90? 4) Will the iDrive show the tyre pressures if I get the TPMS?

But, as said above, echoing Gran Turismo's much better post, it's well worth having the TPMS, IMHO. |
