ExhaustMeister installed on 550 with M5 Mufflers - very cool!
Apologies in advance for not taking pictures/video of the install process, but it was so quick and easy that I didn't think it was warranted.
Summary: The ExhaustMeister is a control box that intercepts the connector/controller of the oem exhaust flaps. This works on the stock 550 exhaust, as well as those of us running M5 mufflers who retained the M5 oem vaccum valves. I think it works on other F10 models as well, but not 100% sure. It allows you to control the oem exhaust vaccum valves/flap at your command. It's AWESOME in my opinion. How it works: The device is remote controller to keep the flaps functioning like OEM (off position) or at the push of a button, forces the flaps on both mufflers open, as if you were on throttle above 3000 RPM or as if you zip tied them open like many of us have (I did previously). At start up, the flaps are in the factory position and open at your command when you push the on button on the remote (there are 2 included for good measure) or on the garage door opener if you program it. This means every time you shut the car off it goes back to the stock position/control. Convenience/Cool Factor: The device even programs to your garage door opener, if you have 2 open program buttons like I did. This is the ultimate solution for those who want more sound and don't want the hassle of zip ties which are a pain to put on and sometimes break or slip off. Price: For $129+shipping you can't go wrong. Note: I am running M5 Mufflers and a custom x-pipe replacing the center muffler. The difference for my car for sound with the flaps open vs. closed is significant at idle and on throttle. For those of you with stock 550 mufflers, the sound gains from opening the flaps with this or zip ties is negligible in my opinion. For those of you with M5 mufflers but with the oem center muffler, I think this is still probably worth it for that extra sound when you want it. Install Instructions: Follow the instructions on their site. Very straightforward, took less than 10 minutes. They even have pictures if you need them. Basically pull the trunk carpet back on the left side after removing the clips, disconnect the factory plug, connect the ExhaustMeister plug to the factory connector and the factory wire to the other cable on the ExhaustMeister. Then take the white ground wire and connect it to one of the bolts in the area. I used the one pictured. Leave the blue wire alone, its the antenna. Put the carpet back. That's it. http://www.exhaustmeister.com/instal...-2009-present/ Link to buy: http://www.exhaustmeister.com/ or http://www.ebay.com/itm/231067201069...witem=&vxp=mtr I will post better videos and sound clips when it's not 1AM or 12 degrees outside, but for now... ignore the remote in the plastic bag. |

I was waiting on your review before I pulled the trigger in this. Not enough 550's with aftermarket exhaust to get a lot of attention.
Having the valves open makes no difference on stock exhaust. |

I will be joinin the '550 with M5 muffs' club soon. To be exact, I'll have the complete M5 Competition Sport exhaust to be exact. The one with the black tips. Should be here by next Friday.
Now I just have to wait until I actually get my car in June/Sept!!

@scott135i -
I believe you have the M5 mufflers… but still have the rest of the 550 exhaust… except you cut out the center resonator and replaced with x-pipe? Is that how a stock M5 exhaust is set up? You have stock DP's? Could you post some driving clips from in-cabin? Flaps open and closed…please? Thanks.

Scott does it again!
Great find! Thanks for the detailed report. You've opened up a whole set of options for those that want to mod their exhaust (stock mid pipe, M5 x pipe, or straight thru pipes) while controlling to final sound with just a press of a button (as long as they're using OEM M5/M6 mufflers).
Brilliant! |

It's the same setup that the full m5 exhaust has except the m5 downpipes are slightly different, it's 3" throughout with no crush points and it's x-pipe is not as well flowing based on some pictures I've seen of the cross section. In 2-3 weeks when warmer I'll get cold start clips, warm start clips, and clips while driving both inside and outside the car with flaps each open and closed. Thanks Go Pro HD. |

Just installed on my 550ix with stock mufflers. 10 minute install was very easy. Not sure why previous posters say it won't make a difference on stock exhaust. I can tell the difference in the car and outside. I will post a video in a few days. Even if not a huge difference in sound, a fun and relatively inexpensive mod!

This guy took 2 weeks to ship mine! Once I received it ... it didn't even work!
I'd love to see how you make out once you receive yours. (Maybe even put it in my car to test again if you would be so gracious to oblige ) I wonder if mine were defective ... but I installed correctly, and could hear the unit clicking on and off ... however there was no change in sound. (I have 550xi w/ M5 mufflers - vacuum lines functional & flaps NOT tied open permanently) ... had mine installed at MaximumPSI in Linden based on Scott's recommendation. |
