19" vs 20"

Considering getting 20" rims but a friend suggested to stay with 19" for ride quality. I know a lot of you guys on here opted for the larger rim, is the difference in ride quality really that noticeable ?

Hope you have good roads where you live.

You will have lower profile tires, and if they are non-runflats, softer sidewalls.

We all have our comfort zones - mine is 19".

i went from 19" runflats to 20" mich pilot super sports, and to me it was a wash.

Even with the ACS springs / 20" wheels on Michelin PSS the ride is very comfortable. The real test was 2 days after i got the springs and wheels installed) my wife and i drove to SF from San Jose (100 miles r/t) on 101, which is pretty shitty, (most norcal roads are) and my wife didn't notice a difference.

only concern would be the lower profile tires + pot holes means you could damage your wheels...

My F11 with 20" Michelin PSS runs much better than my previous F31 with 18" Bridgestone run-flats.

PSS is one of the best tires on the market imho worth every penny, i've tried so many others and yea they maybe cheaper but they just don't come close to the PSS...

Isturbointeg, I'm looking for both. I want something that will look nice and fill the wheel well and hopefully not sacrifice ride quality. I plan on doing coil overs as well.

Filling the wheel well as you put has nothing to do with the choice you are considering. If you go with the stock diameters, you are just trading tire sidewall for wheel as you move to larger diameter wheels. My advice is to go with 20" if you're going to lower, stay with 19s on stock suspension. Just aesthetics but in my opionion, that's what looks best.

If you're going coilovers than definitely go 20's. A lot guys if you search when swapped out their RF's on their 20's to regular tires the ride quality very much improved. The harder sidewall on the RF's really make the ride that much firmer. Even when I went with 21's on regular tires my car feels much smoother. Winters are really bad on RF's as in my opinion I feel like I'm driving on bricks!

I have gone through 6 bent rims and 10 blown Michelin SS 265 30 R20 tires in the past 8 months. So keep in mind sidewall height in areas that have potholes. Just had all 6 rims straightened and now having them powder coated in black with Silver OEM BMW Silver to match car. I am now trying out the Continental DWS 06 255 35 R20 which will give a 35% height to Width ride height which will be about .5 to .75 inch higher sidewall. Also the Continental have a Sidewall technology built into them that supposedly resists pot holes.

The Continental have a 168 MPH limitation and the Michelin SS have a 187+ top speed. Being that I have a Msport with the Dinan Goodies and BMW stage 2 BETA, adding a pair of Pure Turbo rebuilt Aphina turbos and then M5 downpipes when it gets warmer, I might actually be able to use the Summer tires top speed at a track, but how often do you hit above 150?

So, my 2 cents is if you live ANYWHERE that does not have perfect roads, the Michelin SS 265 30 R20 tires on a 20 inch rim are going to have you replacing tires very often and repairing rims constantly.

You might be able to try a 265 35 R20 for a bit more height, but that will only be 5%.

The Handling characteristics of the Michelin SS basically put you in the same position as running run flats for blowouts and rim damage. Probably for the high MPH running temps and handling characteristics of the sidewall.

I have run the Continental DWS 06 on another car and liked them alot. I can give feedbad in the next 6-12 months to see how they hold up.

Just my 2 cents from 6 grand of damage in less than a year with a 20 inch setup and Michelin tires.

Mike

Oh boy, now you've really got me thinkin with these roads out here in Michigan! So I'm wanting to put 20" 343's on my stock 535i xDrive, question is, what tire setup would be best for road conditions? I'll definitely be taking a look at the Continental's and will look to stay away from run flats after previous post!

I had 20" 464M here in DC and had to replace the two front within a month of owning the car. Every city has shitty roads, the key is to just try to avoid the ones that will ding your rims or ruin the tires. I wouldn't shy away from 20" wheels because of the tire sidewalls, guys have ruined 19's also.

I'm just outside Ann Arbor, most local driving done on 275 and 96, both thankfully redone within last few years. In any case I'm thinking of goin with Continental DWS 06's with 255/35/R20 & 285/30/R20 setup. Thoughts?

being that you're in NJ, my only concern are the roads. I'm in NYC, but in NJ all the time. The roads in our area are horrendous.. 1/9 is worse than the Road to Falluja. I'm a pretty careful driver and still have not been able to avoid some of the land mines on NJ roads. I think 20's look real nice on the F10, its just something to think about if you are going to be driving a lot on these roads.
