My new 20's...couple of questions (pics attached)
So I just fitted my new Vossen CV3 in 20x9 / 20x10.5
The tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sport in 245/35-20 and 285/30-20 The weird thing is I ordered them from Tire Rack and they shipped the K1 super sport which are OEM Ferrari. I have another thread about this and a few guys confirmed that this was fine and it would only be Ferrari OEM if it had the K1 markings...and they do!? The size of the tires and rims are essentially what all the F10's on the Vossen website have fitted. I've heard of the term stretch....which from my understanding is when the rim is wider than the tire stretching the tire a little and the rim has lip past the tire? The attached pics show what I'm referring to.....is this normal? Any concerns? Last edited by nwills; 04-21-2012 at 06:25 PM.. |

I like your setup. The first pic does seem to be a stretch for the tires.
If I do see you, I will definitely recognize you ... by the rear license plate cover. "Vossen" |

that's way off. Your offsets may be incorrect, do yo u have spacers?
but more importantly the tire doesn't fit the rim correctly.

All the f10's on the Vossen website have that exact setup. I don't have spacers and the offset is what was indicated for my car from Vossen. Now you have me worried!!! |

The tire is fine that way and this has nothing to do with the wheels offset. Personal preference if you like the tires to stretch more or go for the beefy sidewall look.
In my opinion a 10.5 wide wheel needs 295 although i see majority of the folks run 285 and it's fine. The problem with going 295 in the back is that you'll need a different tire up front with the same rolling diameter because of your Xdrive system. Alan

I'll take the car in to the dealer this week and see what they say...I'll also send a pic to Vossen and get their opinion.
The idea of driving around on wheels that aren't assembled properly is definitely a concern. I'm getting mixed opinions on this and have no knowledge on this matter so hopefully more members can chime in. Thanks to those who've given feedback so far. |

245 and 285 has pretty much 100% matched rolling diameter so yes perfect for xdrive.
I think his point is that he doesn't want the stretch look. Go on the M3 board and search that tire size. I've seen a few and it looks just like how yours are.

What are you guys referring to when you say "stretch my tire"?
Are you saying there is a way where the tire could be literally stretched to go closer to the edge of the rim or is the term stretch refer to the tire not being as wide as the rim and causing the little gap that I see near the edge? |

stretch tire means the tire width is a little shorter then the wheel you have. Here is a link about it
its pretty common with the VW guys http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2234638 |

This answers all my questions! Ok...I'll be able to sleep at night again! lol The tire/rim place didn't do a good job at balancing my wheels as I get vibrations at higher freeway speeds so I'll have to take it in to have it re-balanced. I'll ask them at the same time if they can apply more pressure and stretch the tire a little more to close the gap a little more. Next time around I may go with 295 on the rear and look for a good match for the front. Although that probably won't work considering the 245's sit perfect on the front rim that's a 9. As long as its safe and won't cause problems....I'm good. I guess a carwash with a track system is now completely out of the question for me....the rear rims will be rubbing against the metal tracks with no rubber to protect them! |

BTW....can anyone clarify this for me.... Would my offset change this stretched look? Could it be the wrong offset that's causing this? I've seen other pics of the same 20x9 / 20x10.5 on F10's and some of the pics didn't have the stretched look as far as I could tell. I think they were running the same tires as me....How could they have the tire go right up to the lip? |

For the record, the following are the Alpina OEM 20" rim and Michelin PSS dimensions on the current F10 B5 model:
Front: 8,5 x 20 255/35 ZR20 Rear: 9,5 x 20 285/30 ZR20 Your dimensions appeared somewhat odd to me when reading your other thread, but you already had ordered the tires then... Regarding the "Ferrari" version of the PSS 285/30 tire: - Note that the cheaper "non-Ferrari" version is OEM on the Alpina B5, so the unspecified Load Index of this version should be fine on any current F10 model - The "Ferrari" version appears to be lighter than its sibling with less thread depth than all other "regular" PSS dimensions, so it might wear faster. That one is OEM equipment on the 599 GTO, however on its front wheels!

BTW, do you have pics from the rear, easier to see how the tire side wall stretch from that angle.

I'll be uploading new pics soon...the weather here has reverted back to winter so I'll have to wait a few days!!
It seems like I got to the bottom of my stretch issue. After speaking with a bunch of different installers in the city who gave me their expert opinions...it's pretty unanimous. Different tires have different sidewalls....the dimension of the tire (285) is measured from the inside of the tire. As a result the additional rubber thickness on the sidewall varies from one manufacturer to the other. Some brands and models are also much more square which will make a difference....also why some tires will rub and others won't in the same dimension. The tires I have fitted (Michelin PSS) just sit this way on this rim. A 285 tire is rated to work on a rim that has a max size of 10.5....this tire just looks this way on my rim. There is absolutely nothing wrong or dangerous about this...it's all cosmetic. The tire bead is properly set, the offset is the right one. At this point it's really a matter of whether I can live with the stretch look. Tirerack has a manufacturer 30 day return policy. If I want, I have the option of returning the tire for full refund minus shipping and removal and try another tire that might have a squarer look and beefier sidewall so it can sit right up to the lip without a stretched look. Not sure what I'll do...I'll post pics and maybe you guys can share your opinions? It's been a learning experience for me since prior to this I didn't know the first thing about rims, tires and finding the right fit, size, setup and look. |
