F10 535 - AFE Intake vs BMS - Which one is "better"?

I understand that neither intake will produce any real gains. I already have the BMS intake and am only partially satisfied. It doesn't provide the growl at WOT that I had with intakes on my other BMW's, and it has no heat shield or protection against heat soak from the hot engine back. Wondering what is the general consensus on the AFE intake?? I know it is pricier, but if you could pick one up slightly used, is it worth the money?

you better hurry up and buy that AFE from him before i do!!!! or else this thread means nothing!!

i'm just kidding! being in a sealed enclosure i'm sure it'll be really quiet and you won't have the issue of hot engine temps with an open filter.

What a coincidence, I was just doing some research on this last night. More on what I was reading :

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=716477

To make a long story short, I'd side with BMS as far as performance gains are concerned. Not sure about the sound though. You could always run my set up

Nice find! Especially about the engine temps. I think either intake you still won't get that growl you're looking for.

I had not previously seen the dynos of the BMS intake. I bought an AFE intake and did a before and after dyno, going from a K&N drop in filter to the AFE intake. http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=987089 The BMS intake looks to perform much better than the AFE above about 5K.

BMS has a decent power gain you can kinda feel, sound is improved alot as you can hear a nice growl and the BOV better.

After reading that write up on the BMS I will keep that, but still wish it had more intake growl. Don't really want more exhaust sound, I am happy with my M Performance mufflers.

If you want more sound, consider downpipes or full exhaust system

Would catted downpipes cause a CEL?

They should not but it is not a 100% guarantee
The better the brand, the less likely to get a CEL
I strongly recommend Evolution Racewerks catted downpipe

I literally took off my entire stock intake filter and drove only a few blocks to see if the sound changed and nothing. So either one is not going to give you the growl. A DP will, however there is a "rasp" that comes with the growl that I'm becoming less and less a fan of. I think your best bet is an exhaust system.

I know this tread is about the air intakes and it's turned into growl and sound.
Just wanted to say that my friend installed a pair of stock M5 mufflers on his 535 and it sounds really nice. More aggressive than the stock mufflers he had.
They don't come cheap though.
Something to consider.

I did the DP thing and hated the smell.

+1 on the m5 mufflers. I changed my 535i from stock, to m5 mufflers & it's great! No drone, & it sounds moderately aggressive, but not overbearing. I bought the mufflers & the m5 diffuser here in the marketplace, & had them put on for a reasonable price.

Guys, I already have M Performance mufflers installed and the sound is very similar to M5 mufflers (I have compared the two side by side). Was still looking for additional grunt on the intake side. Doesn't sound like I am going to get it, and not interested in the rasp from a DP. I will likely just leave well enough alone.

I was hearing that vibrant ultra quiet resonators cut down on DP rasp a great deal from my exhaust guy. Then again, I wasn't looking for quiet

So just the mufflers, no other changes needed with this mod? Thx!
