Either way, I prefer de-badging to re-badge engineers - ie. making 'M' versions of 318's...on a similar note, I was getting my 550 washed at a car wash - an older gentleman in an '80's Buick complimented on the 550, then ask what '700' series was that - I said it wasn't a 7, but a 5 - he said I should change the badge to a 700 and that would get me more street cred, especially on the south side of Chicago...and he proceeds to tell me he's been helping younger dudes like me for years...I really didn't want to be a dik to an older guy, so I thanked him for his 'help' and said I would get right on ordering a '700' badge

However - and this is key - if you do this to avoid the shame of being scene in one of these limp F10s, then you must also claim you are doing it for aesthetics or else face further embarrassment.
Actually this is true, but I rather my car be the limp one

The OP was asking about the UK. I have no idea what behavior passes in neo-communist countries like Norway.

I can tell you this though - nobody buys a 550 to show off since it is a very understated car. If you wanted to show-off you would buy a 740i for the same price.

I understand everyone should buy a car within their budget, but I am just saying I would rather get a more powerful car than a base version of a more expensive car.

So in the US:
- I bought a 550i instead of a 740i or 6 cylinder Panamera. While the latter would have more prestige, I prefer a less fancy car with more power.
- If I was in the market for a 4 cylinder BMW, I would buy a 6 cylinder Audi or Lexus for the same price and pass on the BMW.

Regardless, I don't understand why someone hides what car they have. I don't debadge my 5 series in the hope of someone thinking it is a 7.

Funny, I 'raced' () a 'bmw m3' (literally, that was his licence plate) today, he won, no surprise, but barely, he had to rely on his rpms beyond 6700k () I could barely hear his V8 over my lovely I6 (rolled down my windows just for that). He won, I don't understand we was so pissed, he was arguing with the guy at the gate for like 1 minute, poor dude, next time I won't race Mr. M3 at the light so he won't get harrassed by an angry dude.. I mean he won, what else he wants? Pick on little uns..

I know. I've been to Oslo several times. Rich country. Party swedes love to go there to make a few bucks. Beautiful country though. Great for driving with all the roads around the fjords, and lots of tunnels.

My comment was in jest, although I do think your taxes are not reasonable. Personally I would leave the USA and go elsewhere if they raised our taxes to those levels. I don't feel my neighbors have any right to the fruits of my labor.

I don't know what car I would have in Norway, probably a Tesla Model S.

Agree, but non BMW drivers don't see the difference and most of them don't even pay attention on the exhaust. They look on the badge.
It looks cleaner without the badge, like most people say, but I've never seen debadged 550 in person!

I have a 335 and its debadged. Looks cleaner and much easier to wash/wax.

I asked the dealer about it, and he said most of the cars they sold where debadged. No matter what the engine size were. And to be honest, I think it looks ugly with the badge.

I went back and forth deciding to badge or not to badge.

We had it on our previous 318i and I really like the font, almost as iconic as the circular blue and white badge.

I still like it.

You don't have to tape off the badge if you are polishing the car with a DA. But for washing it makes no difference.

Thanks to everyone who has bothered to make a comment, it seems some who debadge do so they can clean their car, but it still leaves the original question unanswered by the many who do debadge....

For me It seems most people are proud to drive a BMW but some are ashamed of thier engine..? BMW engines regardless of size are perfect and many manufacturers can only aspire to make the same, so why bother to debadge.

I guess what ever the real reason, the answer is the same for those who "upgrade" thier badge..?

How can an entire car which took months or years to design "look ugly" because of a small chrome badge on the boot or rear door...surely you are not serious..???

I think it is a Norwegian thing. The entire country is embarrassed by having to spend 120k on 4 cylinder cars.

Only making fun, no offence is ever intended....it`s good to get comments from around the world.

Whatever BMW you drive and whatever engine you have, they are great cars....I have always thought if you buy a BMW, you bought it because they really are the best engineered cars you can buy.

Have you got the 'Msport' lettering or a decal to add to your emblem?
You can buy those on ebay. A worthy addition in case somebody doesn't realize what kind of car they are looking at.
I am serious!

I debaged mine just cuz it looks cleaner and I took my xdrive badge off too. If someone thinks I'm a 528 or 535 and wants to race then even better for me
