I don't really want to trade it... It's paid off and I have some great mods that I'd have to redo. We also just picked up an F15 so I don't see a trade happening.

This just seems like a difficult and potentially expensive retrofit. Taken in isolation, I would think it is hard to justify. But of course you have other considerations, as you have pointed out. Since it's relatively easy to total a five-series, finding seats at a wrecking yard may be a possibility. Do they have airbags in them, though?

According to the brochure there are integrated side airbags in the front seats. They will not have been released if the crash is just frontal and not too severe.
