Wondering what the new CLS is going to look like.
That's MB's real competition to the F10. E-Class is too conservative.

But, BMW needs to offer the 550xi with DCT.
Knowledgeable driving enthusiasts aren't going to accept anything less than a DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION in 2010+.
Don't make a statement like that unless you have spoken to the majority of owners. When we are talking the //M division, performance is everything, but the less performance oriented cars, the ZF automatics they have are REALLY good, smooth and are even really good in "manual" mode if its the upgraded ZF with the full torque converter lock-up and rev-matching.

Also, you can't talk about an enthusiast's wants and needs if you are talking about the xi version of the car, you have already taken a step back, many enthusiasts who want every bit of performance will opt for RWD and snow tires and would view the xi as a step back more than what type of "automatic" trans the car comes with.

Cheers,

when you make a certain amount of space for lights, not using all of that space looks ugly and not thought out...thats what gets me the most, wasted space when you specify an area for lights.

like the MBZ's inner 2 lights, why couldnt they fill up that area? the BMW's eyes fill the whole space provided= good design.

i will always think of MBZ as a very classy car, especially their sedans...but from 2009 and back, this is kind of a let down

Not a fan of the 5 series! It looks hideous... ok, I really don't like it. Impressed with the technology suite that both cars come with.... but definitely not impressed that the gear stick is on the steering column!

The E certainly has more interesting lines on the side of the car but that's about it.

The 535i and 550i do feature very nicely laid-out exhaust pipes on each side.

ANYTHING other than my screen name is a step back in performance.
But, I need 4 doors and AWD for my weekly ski trips to the mountains.
That is the ONLY reason I'm considering buying a German sedan.

It's a fact that a PROPERLY DESIGNED DCT will offer the best performance and fuel mileage of any transmission available.
I REQUIRE the best drive train, and that will include a dual clutch transmission.
Ferrari, Porsche, and Audi are offering dual clutch on their new models,
because it is the BEST option available.
Let's see if BMW will offer the BEST as well.

Look at how the guy sit much more upright and tight in the 5er. That's the only one thing I deplore with the 5 series now that I realized it looks better than the E.

I highly doubt BMW will provide the tranny. A few members here who are very aware of the plans (sorry I don't know their screen names off the top of my head), have said a few times that this is the tranny BMW will be pursuing from here on in. Please first drive the car, then start going all of the place saying you NEED the BEST and this is not it.

I agree, this is not EVER going to be a DCT, but it may come damn close, so go drive it first. Besides, this car is not designed to be ULTIMATE performance. It's designed to be a luxury sport sedan, not a performance sedan.

Yes I agree and price-wise it competes with the 3er coupe, which is actually of a different class.

Just my opinion, but the front profile of the 5er looks like a volvo s80.

Yes, you will need to get a 535i or the 550i. See pic.

I don't understand your obsession with DCT. I would bet you $100 that the 550i (or any of the non-M models) will not be available with DCT. Even the M5 is questionable due to the cost associated with making DCT that can handle the amount of torque generated with a high output FI engine.

Even the X5/X6 M's are not available with DCT, and there is little reason to believe that BMW will put a very costly option on non-M models.

Its availability and cost aside, you should really test drive the new Steptronic (X5/X6 M) to judge how it performs. It even comes with the launch control and is fantastic (if you are into not shifting manually).

If you are really into driving (as you claim you are), just ditch the automatic transmission all together and go for the manual. While you are at it, you can also ditch the AWD option.

Just looking at the pictures, I would have guessed that the 5 is smaller (look at the rear seats compared to the E). I personally think the 5 has become too big (and too heavy) for its own good. I wished that BMW would keep the dimensions and weight in check, but I guess it was too much to ask
