LSD for F10 550i 6MT
Thinking of getting this LSD for my '13 550i 6MT:
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-wavetrac...309172wkwvtkt/ I looked up Quaife as well but it appears they don't make one for the manual, and Wavetrac on paper has some competitive advantages in zero traction scenarios (one wheel off the ground/ice). I called a differential shop to ask if they would install this Wavetrac diff and he was reluctant since they've had customers complain due to a clunking behavior specifically with the Wavetrac (despite backlash being set to spec). He commented that it could have been due to the suspension being designed around the open diff and not meshing well with LSD. He didn't comment whether this was with this particular year/model so this isn't too deterring for me without more info. Anyone done the conversion with Wavetrac or other brands? Thoughts? |

Would love to know as well. Although I suggest you call up Birds Auto UK directly, it might be that when they state "550i" they mean the manual transmission car versus when they state "550i auto".

Anyone ever get this done on their f10 yet? Been wanting to do this ever since all my engine mods are now done and have experienced really lousy traction characteristics on the strip/track.

It did not fit? As in: you ordered the one spec'ed for your F10 535i and it didn't fit when you tried to install it? That's startling. Any story behind it?
But yeah - let us know if you find out anything. I've been planning on the Wavetrac from ECS Turning for a while now. My 550 is such a great car with this huge, ugly glaring fault. My track experience is pretty much ruined by the open diff - I'm a track rat but I won't do another one until I'm running the LSD. I'm absolutely appalled BMW would install an open diff in any high powered car of theirs. |

I was lucky enough to be able to sell it locally to someone with an E90 and he says it fit perfectly. |

I went and talked to my local BMW shop about LSD's. They work with diffsonline.com to put LSD's in these F10's. Diffsonline doesn't have anything on their website for F10's, so its a custom job ostensibly. I can't get a price out of either without digging further.
Anyone have comments on how tough it is to install the Wavetrac yourself? ECStuning has the diff + install kit for the M/T cars and that sure sounds like a fun project. ***UPDATE: DiffsOnline got back to me and said this is something they do indeed do without being what they would define as 'custom.' Dan there quoted me at $2.8k (parts & labor) to move to a Wavetrac. Last edited by OppositeLock72; 04-26-2021 at 03:36 PM.. |

Finally decided to order a Quaife LSD for the 550i, from Birds Auto in UK.
Prefabricated complete diff to avoid a long downtime for the car, and leaving it to the Birds Auto experts who have done many of these conversions. It requires cutting of the welded ring gear and some other machine work to convert it from the stock diff. No coding required since the electronic diff is controlled by ABS when wheels slip. Already negotiated installation labor on home soil once it arrives. Just gotta order some gear 75W-90 gear oil, probably will be Amsoil. Need to figure out the required volume. |

Placed the order for the diff, confirmed with a scope that for the Manual it is a 3.08 final drive ratio. Ordered 75W-90 Amsoil diff fluid and a magnetic drain plug.
Might have to extend labor cost to replace clutch pilot/throw out bearing since it's making more noise than it did before. |
