Your opinions

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I am wanting to get a new car and having a hard time deciding which one to get.

At first I considered getting the M3 but after deciding my girlfriend moving in, a coupe won't be big enough. I am now also considering the 5 series.

I am pretty young.. I'm sure everyone will hate a 19 year old driving an M3 or a BMW in general. But it ain't Daddy's money or anything like that. I grew up in a different environment then most kids. Started to earn my own money pretty early. Enough to afford my own house and a pretty nice car if I wanted to.

Always loved bimmers as a kid.

What do you guys think for a young kid living with his girlfriend and who is also a student athlete? Coupe or sedan?

Don't hate. Just want opinions.
Thanks.

Depends on what your looking for. If you we're set on M3 before GF moving in then get the M3 sedan. If you need more room in rear seats/ trunk then go with the 5. If you want more power, speed etc without the extra size then go M3. If you want space and lots of power go 550.

Go for an M3 sedan man. Tons of space and power all you need to go with that chassis. Add to it that there's a new one coming out in a few months in the new format and you'll get a very good price for sure! You can wait for the M4 to come out too as I am sure it will give you enough space as well. However f10 5 series? I don't know if just you and your girlfriend comprise enough space to fill it! LOL Do you have pets or something? I'd go 3 series and then seek to upgrade to a 5 series later on IF and when you felt you needed not only the space but the increased cost of owning the larger sport sedan. You seem pretty well set up financially so why not save some $$$ and invest it and get the smaller but equally powerful=fun M3 vs stepping up in both power/price right now? You guys sound pretty young so you have tons of time to upgrade.

So you need bigger car just because of your gf?
I had no space issues with one child and was driving 335i coupe
Get 2-door M3
You are not gaining any space by getting sedan

It sounds like money is not an issue for you.

Get two cars. Get the M3 because you will love it and get a beater for when you have to park someplace where you wouldn't want to park the M3. Something like a 10 year old Ford Taurus with a huge trunk would do nicely, and would cost about as much as a set of tires for the M3.

Which car would you rather park at Dodger stadium?

New M3 is going to be released soon. If you really want an M car, I recommend to wait for the new M3 or M4 that are going to have more torque at lower rpm. Can't wait until the release of the beautiful M4. Most likely going to be my next car.

Huh?

As an old sage used to say..."Girlfriends come and go. But, a car has to last beyond a couple of car payments".

Enjoy your youth! Get the M3, sedan or coupe, it doesn't matter which but don't be seen in an old man's car like mine (F10).

FORGET about any M3 being a "multipurpose" car. You just ain't going to want to use it for any girl friend things, pets, shopping (oh yeah, she'll shop), tailgate parties, or even pick-up games down by the park. Use your girlfreind's beater Honda for that or, as 'numbers guy' suggested, pick up a cheap 10 year old Taurus kind of car for that stuff. And, unless your girlfriend is Dana Kilpatrick, she just won't get it why the M3 is not "just" a car. Yeah!

Geez, how big is your girlfriend? Or how much are you already letting your girlfriend control you? I'd say get the car you want and until you combine bank accounts your girlfriend can get whatever she can afford.

Go M3 for sure. The 5 series is a beautiful car to look at but in terms of driving its pretty boring for a guy like me who've always had smaller nimble cars like the 3 series. Given your age i would def. go M3.

19yo driving around in a 550 will look like you are driving around in daddy's car regardless.

I'd say M3 sedan for sure. 19 year old doesn't look right in a 5 series lol. I am 26 and sometimes I feel weird driving my 5series.

But honestly I would go with a M3. It's been my favorite car for years and I wanted to buy an m3. But because I already have a 328i I wanted to change it up a bit with a 550. Also both the M3 and a 5 series are great cars, don't think you'll be disappointed with either.

@19 I would never consider a 5-series. I'am over 40 now and I already feel misplaced in this big comfy sedan.

You're not Jesse from 'Breaking Bad' by any chance are you? Seriously though, you're far too young for a 5-Series, go for the M3. When I was 19 a 10 year old Nissan Cherry with a Starsky and Hutch kind of stripe on the sides was as far as I could stretch - still, I sure had some fun in that Nissan!

I have a different opinion than some of the folks here. I've driven M cars for the last 10 years - both M5 and more recently an M3. I did love my 2008 space gray M3, but it is a tight squeeze inside in my view. It's designed to fit you like a glove. Plus, I live in Wi and wanted AWD. Both the M5 and M3 were a lot of fun to drive and were awesome to look at. However I have zero regrets on my new 550i xdrive - added Dinan stage 2, suspension and exhaust right out of the dealer. It has much more power than the M3 and is a very classy ride. All that being said though, I've got several decades on you and my gut feel is the M3 is for a bit younger crowd if you're looking for an everyday drive mainly because its quite a bit rougher ride than the 550i and your back and rear may be able to tolerate it on an everyday basis. However, I think the stock suspension on the 550i is way too soft for my tastes - the Dinan suspension for the 550i fits nicely in between that of the M3 and the stock 550i.

M3 simply on the basis kids are not on for a while I guess, you can always and probably end up with a 5 series or bigger in the future but judging by your age and situation M3 without any debates.
