Exclamation Steering wheel does not lock itself

Hi,
today I realise that my car's steering wheel does not lock itself after turning car off.My all previous cars' steering wheel lock itself after turning ignition off.I can turn to the left or right to the utmost if I force enough. I call my dealer and he says new f10 does not have this feature due to EPS.

How about your steering wheels?

I would guess that with modern electronic protection systems where you can't highwire the car, a steering lock doesn't make sense.

It may or may not make sense but mine definitely has one!

As soon as you open the door, you can hear an actuator behind the wheel move, and at that point the steering wheel is locked solid.

Maybe this is country specific?

May be.
I talked one of friend from germany and he said his car also doesnt lock.

When you turn ignition off it really becomes too hard to turn the wheel. But if u use enough force u can turn it. I realize it on an ice where it becomes too easy.

I don't want to get into an argument here but I am telling you categorically that my car has a steering lock.

If I stop the engine, nothing happens. The steering of course becomes extremely stiff due to the lack of power assistance but I can still move the wheel.

The second I open the drivers door, there is a mechanical noise from behind the dashboard and from that point onwards, the steering wheel is completely immobile and cannot be moved anything more than a couple of millimetres. Sometimes you can even see the wheel move ever so slightly as the lock engages.

Yours is either faulty, you're not testing it properly, or that feature is not present in cars built for your country.

Have you tried moving the wheel after turning off the ignition and opening the drivers door?

On the E9X series, at least for the US market, the steering lock was deleted sometime in 2007 after a fault required steering column replacements in a large number of cars. It's possible that such locks are required by law in the UK; that would explain the difference. I would guess that the lock is pretty redundant with all the other immobilization features.

It may only feel like it's locked once you've turned it a fair bit? That's what I would expect.

Interesting, I wonder if this is more to do with the build date rather than country of registration.
My September built, UK purchased and registered F10 535d M Sport most definitely does not have a steering lock; yes, of course the wheel turning resistance increases when you switch off, but at no point does it lock, even with the ignition switched off (second button press after stopping the engine). I also locked myself into the car and, again, no steering lock.
