520d mpg figs

Have 4000 mile up on my 520D and I am extremely disapointed in the mpg figures

Averaged at 36.9 mpg over the 4000 miles. Combined motorway and town driving.

The latest tank of fuel tipped as low as 34.9 ie 8l/100km.

Surely this cant be normal??

520D 8 speed Auto ,17's.

Atleast I'm very satisfied (F10 520dA), average consumption after 7000km is 5.4L/100km.

Some time ago one 170km trip average consumption was 4.3L/100km!

520d mpg

the dealer demonstrator Auto I drove was in the High 30's, which was one of the reasons I decided to go for the manual.

I would be interested to get people's experience of the manual.

I test drove the f10 3.0 diesel M-Sport yesterday and paid NO attention to running it in, it had 300 miles on it, I thrashed it and it went well I got 36MPG !!!
and thats booting it. You got the wrong engine choice I think.

Me on the 520d MT, just over 3200 miles done. I'm getting 50.5 mpg. Maximum I've gotten is 51.2. Fingers crossed, I continue to get the same average.

I believe there's some truth in that. I felt the 520d (although my drive was in a new and tight engine) will be working hard in normal day to day urban conditions, it's a heavy car to get moving. Drive steady, or plenty of constant 70mph 'ish' drives, the 520d will be like 'TurboT', above 50mpg as an average.

The 530d just doesn't need to work hard in normal driving, so there's no real penalty to a bit of welly, like there will be in the 520d.

I'm not sure the manual will be much different, driven the same way as the auto. Remember in light driving the auto comes off best, very low revs being needed.

Interested to see how mpg pans out over time, in the 520d examples.

I've done 2400 miles so far, and typically on a run I get 50mpg, I have had 54mpg..however, it takes alot of concentration, discipline and free-wheeling...

So long as it costs less than the pityfull 11p HMRC allowance my employer to pays me I'm happy.

Thats about the same as Im getting. I went from Norway to Nürburgring 2 weeks ago. Stayed in the left lane the whole trip. Consumed 6,1 liter/100 km on average, which is half what my 330 use in the same conditions.

On a recent weekend break in Scotland in my F11 520d std auto. Managed 47mpg in the 400 mile trip here running most of the way at 80mph well loaded up. Been running around fast lanes 4 up making 41mpg. Overall av 43 on the tank. 1300 on the clock, must admit I'm very happy with this! Nobody can believe it is a 2L.

With 13K km on the clock I'm getting steady 48mpg. Mixture of City, Motorway and National road driving. Delighted with the economy and the turn of speed when overtaking.

This is great MPG, and if your booting it as well you are doing well.

Did you follow the running in procedure?.

The disparity in consumptione figures has a lot to do (I suspect) with the inaccuracy of the OBC consumption reading. On my old E60 the differential was 16% positive from the OBC, i.e if it read 50mpg the reality was that the car was returning 42 mpg. Brim to brim measurement is the most accurate way to measure fuel consumption.

The alternative is that two identical BMW 2.0TD engines consume massively different amounts of fuel ingeneral use, surely not??

And converted as mpg:

average consumption after 7000km is 5.4L/100km=52mpg.

Some time ago one 170km trip average consumption was 4.3L/100km=66mpg!

I was told by the dealer not to worry about it and just bring it back after 2k miles for a tightenup

What is the running-in procedure for the 520D? My dealer also told me not to worry about it.

Real brim-to-brim measurements are giving 5.8l/100km.

I agree, 'brim to brim' is the best way to get pretty accurate mpg figures. The other thing, no two cars are used the same, even in similar conditions. Even someone's view of driving hard, is another's 'light' driving. Only true comparison is steady speed driving at a known speed and load.

Personally I expect to see a range around 40 - 55mpg reported on the forums, for the 520d, with a few outside these figures.
