you guys are lucky to get the D model in europe. Not available here in NA. I'm amazed that the diesel engine has such good fuel economy. My 535ix with 2500km on it is currently averaging at 11L/100km! Pretty envious with your guys' numbers. I can only go around 530km before needing a refuel.

Does the sport auto box in normal mode use more fuel than a standard auto box?

after 800 miles averaging 36mpg, best 42mpg on long M-way run with light right foot, down to 37 for same run in sport mode(chassis and drivetrain). late 20's in town. Not quite what it said on the tin but good enough for such a big car i guess?

520d auto

I average 46mpg on my 20min 11mile journey to work, driven gently.

My overall range is 42-51mpg for this journey with the cold weather and traffic lights having the greatest negative impact.

I also use cruise control which has an overall positive effect to mpg

I'd get that checked. Since August I average approx 37.5 mpg overall and I'll get 42mpg on the motorway driving like Lewis Hamilton ! If I'm careful it'll do between 44-46 mpg. this is a 530D. I'm sure if I drove carefully everywhere I could probably get an overall figure of 40 mpg. I really love this car, it's the dogs !

Cheers

I agree. My 520d Sports Auto (for most part in Normal mode, also with light right foot) does 47 to 49mpg on 170 mile trip. Combination approx: Town:A road:Motorway = 5:45:120.

Same journey, but with more aggressive driving style and more Sports mode, it is in the 42 to 45mpg range.

Total current mileage is about 2,700 miles.

Has been often 4 up plus dog and luggage with air-con/heated seats on, may make some difference but still as you guys say, not brilliant. Can just see dealer's face asking for it to be checked out though!

I have found most cars do NOT improve over mileage much at all.
What they start with they usually end with mileage wise.

I'm now 3000miles in and averaging around 42mpg for just around the town and a little dual carriageway.

I did 200 miles around town and 500 motorway miles the other weekend and it only used £60 worth of fuel.....think it was up around 50mpg on the motorway.

Not doing too bad, but like people are saying it isn't what the book said!

Has anybody tackled the deals about this and asked how they get the silly high milage?

Simon

Neil, had my E61 M535D for 2 and 1/2 years and would have loved a new F11 535D too but had a realistic budget of £41k and plumped for 520D SE with plenty (£11k) options. Of course you can feel you're 100 bhp down but most of my miles are at a steadyish 75-80 on M ways/dual carriageways and I genuinely get more pleasure from having a £20k better bank balance and getting 5-600 miles per tank of Derv.Loving the more limo like feel, particularly with options i chose.£60k is a lot of dosh, but it's all relative in the end.

To my knowledge all cars produce the three mileage figures and the CO2 output figure on a rolling road, in controlled / static conditions. I believe it is largely the lack of wind resistance that inflates the published mileage claims. Every car, from every manufacturer, has unrealistic figures published.

I think a real world calculation is ~ -10% to -15% on published, and obviously can be considerably more if driven with a heavy right foot.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm talking nonsense.

Cheers.

new to the forum (hi)... just ordered a 520d manual and hoping for good mpgs!

The test car I had (520dMT Tourer with about 1000miles on the clock) averaged between 36 and 39mpg but I tend to cruise around 90ish on the m-may and tend to use most of the performance most of the time. Plus this is a BIG car - really felt it, especially when braking, compared to my current car.

I think it depends massively on:
- style of driving (I get 26-27mpg from my current 330i, my wife gets 33-34mpg over same roads)
- mix of roads, natch, but also elevation... nothing kills my mpg more than a drive over hilly roads. if you live in a flat country/county you would get much higher mpg
- weight in car. not being insensitive here.... I have friends with boot-fulls of crap they cart around everywhere for no reason, plus I always run my tank dry and fill up fully so on average it is only half full.... if you keep topping your tank up (never letting it get below half full/empty) it will make a difference. Imagine how much 70 liters of fuel weighs!

I suspect in reality the standard cars are pretty close on mpg due to manufacturing tolerances etc.

PS - talking style of driving.. this shows the difference it can make - this is my range on full tank (after creeping up the m-way at 60ish) - remember this is a 272bhp 330i !

I dropped my girlfriend at T1 LHR this morning - this was a 90% motorway and dual carriageway drive (but with some stationary traffic on the M25 - naturally ). I was in no hurry to get into the office, as I was early, so I stayed at around 60MPH to 70MPH. When I got to work, I checked the Journey Information and got average 56.3 MPG

The car was stood for 5 minutes initially, to warm up and clear some thin frosting on the windscreen. First 10 minutes of journey were in Sport mode, the rest in Normal.

I did a non-rush hour journey from Leeds to Whitby, approx 60% M62, 40% good A roads. On the M62 it averaged 60-65 mpg, overall trip was 55mpg. Deduct 1mpg for OBC inaccuracies, averaged 60mph on motorway.

It's definitely improved since I did the same trip a month or so ago.

The OBC is now showing 43 mpg after mainly short round town trips.

The official regime in reality is only a comparison test, model to model. There are so many variable in day to day driving.

Your comment, reference ~ -10% to -15% from published combined figure, is about right for the average driver, in average conditions. Proven over millions of user miles.

We have to remember that we can double (or halve) our consumption, simply on the conditions of use, and our driving style. Yes, the mpg range is that wide in most cars.

Anyone who drives a 520d at 85 - 90mph won't get good figures, that is way outside the mph range, for any 'economy' figures. The familiar statement “Wind resistance increases exponentially with speed”, comes to mind.

The E60 520d gives about 50.8mpg at 70mph motorway speeds, under test conditions. Can't see the F10 being much better at the same speed.
