I've only done 800 miles and the best I've achieved is 49mpg @ 60mph on the M4. In and around London I get about 25-30mpg using the sports mode (drives better) on a std auto. Today between work and South london using M4 I got 43mpg @ 75mph + london traffic. I hope it does get better as well.

Thanks for the replys guys. I called the dealership yesterday and asked if there have been any other reports of poor consumption figures. I was told that they hadnt any other compleints of poor fuel economy.

I still dont think that the car should return less MPGs than the quoted Urban figure. The car rarely exceeds 2000 rpm when I drive it and yesterday I even used cruise control to eliminate my driving style / foot as the main culprit. The car still returned 36 MPG. I've also confirmed the consumption manually. Very disappointing, I must say.

I would get the cars fuelling checked at the dealership, I drove the 3.0 Diesel f10 M Sport and thrashed it as much as I could and it only had 300 miles on as a DEMO, it returned 36MPG.

I cannot get more than 36mpg regardless of how gently I drive it. Most of my journeys are 15-20 mins and I notice that the engine is just about fully warmed up by the time my journey ends.

I am very disappointed with the poor fuel consumption. My last 520D M Sport MT was delivering 43mpg no mapper how hard I drove it. Does anyone think the consumption will improve with time? Its hard to imagine it improving much to be honest.
OK, so you are driving a new motor, not yet up to efficiency (meaning a very tight engine). I assume the run-in has been in the past month or so, in colder winter driving and short runs. From your posting it is all 'cold start' driving.

I'd say it sounds the worse situation for any engine and mpg.

What's the exact driving conditions? (mileage, stop-start, etc.)

I also assume you compare to long term use in the previous car, not a 1,000 miles, or so, in winter conditions.

Also what is it like once warm and out on the open road, I'd reset the OBC and travel a bit decent road at 60 -70 mph and see what the car does on a cruise. You say it won't do more than 36 mpg however you drive it. Do you reset the OBC each trip and try different techniques?

I know what you are saying, but a test drive in a different car, engine, etc., proves nothing if you had a decent test drive.

From how I read Drjferris's posting, the reality is a lot of cold starts and no real mileage, so a non starter for decent mpg in any engine.

Sounds pretty good for a new engine. 43mpg @ 75mph + London traffic, sure the 'traffic' part eats away at a decent average. What's the 75mph part like, for mpg, without the + London traffic?

90% Motorway mileage @ 135KPH with the rest urban / secondary rural routes.

No better than my E60 520 D M Sport Auto despite all the Efficient Dynamics tech, but good enough.

Interestinlgy, have been driving a 116D loaner for the last week and over the same route is giving IDENTICAL fuel consumption
You drive quite fast, that will knock your mpg dramatically from what is possible, remember increasing speed from 60 - 80 mph uses about 30% more fuel. Born out with the 116d, which will bit hit harder at speed, and therefore similar figures for each car.

The ED features don't have much impact at speed, or motortway driving. Think of the down side of the hybrid concept like the Prius, get up to speed and even a BMW M3 can be as fuel efficient. (Remember Top Gear's M3 vs. Prius, running the Prius flat out?)

ED features help, no doubt about it, but at speed energy needed to get from A to B is more based on our school boy physics, similar energy needed, whatever the finer details.

BTW, from user reports it does appear the latest eco tuned motors, (not just BMW's ED package) return about 25% less than the official combined figure. Whereas most cars return around 10 - 15% below the official combined figure.

Drive the ED cars light, then the gains are more evident, but most folks drive harder than they think, or in conditions that sap the mpg and blur the edges of ED efficiencies.

2,000 miles done, 40mpg overall, got 51mpg on a 125 mile trip last Sunday. Can't complain about those figures from an automatic.

I'm covering 10-15 miles on each run without much stopping and starting and its the same run each day. I dont exceed 55mph. It hit 40mpg earlier until I turned off the main road and by the time I finished my journey it was back to approx 35mpg I reset the fuel consumption meter prior to each journey. I will be doing a 60 mile trip this weekend and it will be interesting to see if there is any improvement.

I used to do the same 10-15 mile trip with my last car, a 08 520D M Sport MT, which used to do the same journey at approx 43/44mpg regardless of how hard I drove it or the time of year.

I absolutely love the new car and this is literally the only thing that isn't perfect about it in my opinion. I am hoping that its just a matter of the engine & gearbox components bedding in properly.

I would think that the variances are down to driving style more than anything else. Some that think they are being gentle and smooth and rarely touching the brakes may in fact not be at all. It's got to be really difficult to analyse your own driving style.

this morning on my 20m traffic free motorway journey to work I decided to not use the cruise control because I reckoned I could get better mpg by using my foot (I'd heard this a number of times over the years and just assumed it to be true). Instead of the consistent 52mpg I have been getting I managed 48 instead. I can only imagine that I was far less consistent on the throttle than I had expected.

Tonight I'm bypassing the motorway and taking the country lanes in Sport mode and with the transmission in manual. I'm expecting to get about 38mpg :-)

guys, would be useful if you could state if you have a manual or auto, as am sure there is a big variance in consumption between the two.

520dMT

Now at 4500 miles and have just returned from skiing in Switzerland which gave me a chance to check out the mpg. Over 1300 miles it returned 51.5 mpg driven at 80 mph (130kmh) on Autoroutes for 1200 miles and about 30 mph for 100 miles on twisty Swiss mountain roads.

The max fuel range is 1300km or 800 miles on a full tank according to the trip computer. Haven't done the maths to work out what mpg that gives.

I could have got much more if I drove at 70 (was getting 56 mpg on UK Motorways) but it was a long trip and no reason to make it last longer.

I suspect the Auto transmission is significantly less efficient going through the gears but I would be interested to see what happens when it is up to 80 mph and the long 8th gear kicks in. I was doing 2300 rpm at 80 and I understand that the auto runs at 2000 rpm at 80.

Average over 4500 miles is 48.0 mpg. Average over 90k miles on my previous E60 525dMT (same bhp) was 35.3 mpg. Can't complain at that.

520d Sport Auto ... yes, this sounds right to me. It is very efficient at UK motorway speeds

I tested this today 520d Touring Sport Auto. 2 adults, 3 children. 80mph was 2050-2100 revs.

520D Sport Auto

I covered about 200 miles over the weekend and the economy seems to be improving a little as the car returned 40mpg. Its still very poor but better than before.

Warwick to Leeds yesterday, cruise on 73mph, 53mpg.

Warwick to Warrington today. Bit more traffic but still almost 52 mpg.

I'm heading for well over 700 miles on this tank of fuel.

Bit boring driving that slow though.

If anyone's really worried, hope my experience reassures you.

I have an F10 520A. First 5000 miles I was struggling to get 40+ mpg as the actual (measured rather than computer) - though on long hauls it was relatively easily to get the computer to report 47-50mpg.

It's noticeably increased since around 10,000 miles

I've just completed 20,000 miles. I'm averaging (without trying, and occasionally driving pretty aggressively) 51mpg (again measured, not computer), and can easily get the computer to report 55-57mpg for a tank.

Given I appear to need to get a bank loan for every single fill-up given current price of diesel, for this I am very grateful!

Wow that's amazing! Hope I cen replicate that in mine when it arrives. Given that diesel is supposed to be heading towards £2 per litre this year - especially if Saudi succumbs to what they are calling the 'Arab Spring'
