7500 miles. 520d. 17" wheels.

Lifetime MPG is 44.4

75% of those miles are motorway of which 50% were with cruise set at 70-75. 40% would be without cruise at speeds over 80mph. 10% would be 90-100mph.

I got bored of trying to see how high an MPG I can eek out some months ago and now drive it without regard to economy, with the aircon, stereo etc going.

Given my driving style 44.4mpg is bloody great. The 2006 Audi A4 2.0TD I had averaged in the high 30's over 4 years and was much smaller.

I have 520d auto. Most of my driving is in and around london and get around 17-28 mpg on journey computer - average 30. Best 49mpg Gatwick ---> london at night no traffic. the bigger diesel or even petrol seem to be better!.

Just an update on the poor fuel economy ..... I now have approx 7000mls on the clock and unfortunately no improvement in economy, still struggeling to reach 40mpg and typically 38 mpg.

I really cant understand how BMW could claim that this car does 20mpg more. Its just not true from my experience.

I absolutely love this car and it is simply outstanding despite the very minor gripe of fuel economy.

I've got a manual box, spend most of my time on the motorway using cruise control where I can, doing 80-85mpg, and comfortably get 47mpg

Well I've done 8k miles now in my F10 520d SE sport auto 18" wheels since March. My average is 41.8mpg - verified by brim to brim fuel calculations coming out around 41mpg. About 80-90% of the miles have been motorway (mostly busy motorway at that - makes a huge difference if you can't just cruise).

I have found that on my daily commute of 30 miles (4-5 miles around town and the rest motorway) if I am VERY careful I can get 48-52mpg. However I can't bear driving like that all the time - it depresses me - and so I drive how I do and get 41.8mpg. I agree with ShakenBake above - I got bored of trying to max out my economy after a few weeks.

The car is going back soon and I'm picking up my E90 LCI 335d next week. With a 24 hour test drive of that, with my 'normal' driving style and routes, I got 38-39mpg without trying. For 20k miles per year that difference would equate to around £100 per year in extra fuel. Not too bad in my opinion.

It all depends on how you like to drive, and traffic conditions/congestion. The 520d is pretty heavy and eats fuel when you have to get back up to speed when traffic slows on the motorway - even with a very light right foot. I am a fairly keen driver (no madman methinks) and in my experience I find that bigger, more powerful engines enable me to get much closer to quoted fuel consumption as a result - I guess because I don't have to wind up the turbocharger quite so much or so often.

Sums it up very well, something I've always found over many, many years of motoring.

The thinking is often that smaller engines will work more time in the most efficient range, but that doesn't always stack up, because we need more power (than most efficient) to drive like we would, in a larger engine model. So fuel consumption comes out very similar, UNLESS we do drive suited to the smaller engine, which is slower than we would like to accelerate, or cruise.

True. With my previous E61 535d I averaged 36mpg in the time I had it (3 years) in mixed conditions but not thrashing it.

When it came to changing to the F11 it was a choice between the 535d or changing back to petrol with the 535i. In the end I chose the 535i because I am not doing large mileages these days; the petrol version is still slightly smoother even if it doesn't have quite the torque and I was starting to get diesel particulate filter issues with the 535d probably because of the low mileage that I do.

I've had the 535i for nearly a year and it is averaging 32mpg which I am reasonably happy with.

Two years later

Still only averaging 37mpg. It seems the topography has a Lot to do with efficiency on these cars.

The 520d does not like hills. On the flat or approx 60mph you will get the 50 mpg and more.

However if Like me your daily drive includes two sets of hill before destination the 520d will start to suffer.

Also it seems the slower you go the better the mpg. The inverse is also true. Anything over 80mph and efficiency drops considerably.

In summary hills and heavy foot expect mid thirtys
Crawl on the flat and expect mid 50's. There's a huge variance.

I got the M-performance upgrade, now the hills are just no problem anymore, and I feel it uses even less fuel. I testet it the other day, one hour with the cruisecontrol set on 100 km/h. A little hilly and curvy. 4,3 L/10km. Incredible for a car that size!

Just do 1000-1200 without getting revs' over 2500-3000.... vary it a little

I did the same as per various instructions.... now at 4500 it drives great and gets excellent mpg and power

Had my 520d M sport for 15 months now and covered 37k miles. Good mix of motorway, A roads and lanes and drive it like a loon according to my wife.....lifetime average is now 45mpg, was around 47 for the first 10k miles but has dropped off as my driving has probably got more erratic. However, a colleague at work has a 3.0D S Jag XF with around 280 bhp and he has averaged 42mpg over 30k miles.....
