RTTI not always working (UK)
Finally registered with BMW assist which I assume means that RTTI (as opposed to TMC) is actvated as well.
Drove a 50 mile trip today, RTTI was active on one, TMC on the other. Shouldn't be RTTI all of the time and presumbly only dropping to TMC is GSM network coverage is not possible for any reason? I've read the bmw blurb about it , anyone have any technical info on it? Understands it updates every 3 minutes. How do you know te build in phone has reception (is that teh display on the sat nav or is that the reception of your bluetooth phone that its displaying?) |

Yes - RTTI should be active most of the time. As long as the car has reception. It make take a minute or two once you program a destination but that is all. RTTI infact stays displayed even when the car has lost reception and is not updating. Which is a little misleading in my opinion. That is once it has gained some traffic information the TMC is replaced by RTTI and even this morning while I was in Cornwall it got the RTTI when I started off but the car then lost reception for 20 minutes but the RTTI was still displayed (Even though it was not updating)
The easiest I have found way to check if the car has a Data connection (Anyone who knows an easier way please chip in) is to go to the ConnectDrive menu and select the "Service status". There you see two options
If the car does not have a Data connection the "Update BMW Services" is dimmed out - if it does have a Data connection then it is normal as shown here If you leave it on this screen then as you drive you will see that the Update BMW Services will go between Dim and Normal as the signal comes and goes. If you look at some of the other threads I have been having an issue where in one direction it would work but in the other direction it would not work. This seems to be when the car has no data coverage when you start the journey, even if there is coverage the car does not connect to it for some considerable time/ distance 30 mins/ 20 miles in my case. Interested to know what you find Jon |

thanks that is very useful , I will look next time I drive.
At least there is the backup of TMC which is pretty good (although only as good as the information that is given to it) |

This might sound like a 'simple' question, but how can I tell if RTTI is connected? Is RTTI supposed to look different or is there an icon active? I too have the BMW assist, and just was wondering if I need to manually chose RTTI over TMC. I cannot find anything relevant in the manual or the car information, so any help is most welcome.

Hi You can see it in the Nav screen
If you have the info boxes displayed on the Nav screen (Turn these on/off by pressing the iDrive controller) In the example above it is showing TMC as the car had no Data Connection (Again!!) but when it gets a Data Connection the TMC will change to RTTI and you will have a lot more detailed traffic info Jon |

how do you get the journet computer on to the right hand side and the map on the left?
I'm obviously being stupid here but when I've tried and moved the idriver controller to the right and select spilt screen, I get the map on the right When you select spilt screen is it the option you are curently have selected that you want on the right? |

Once you have the split screen enabled (from the option button) you can move the iDrive controller to the right and when the split screen is displayed, press down on the iDrive controller and then you can select what you want to display.
Or with speech control say "split screen" and "Journey computer" I mostly have the "Journey computer" or the "Entertainment details" Jon |

Correct the split screen has no effect on the the traffic info displays. I nearly always have the split screen on as I like the Journey Computer to see my mpg for the journey or with the DAB radio on it will display the info text transmitted such as the song name that is playing if you have it set for "Entertainment Details".
I think the Traffic info is only really useful if you have a destination set so you get info if a road is closed on your route etc. I have 3 of the preset buttons programmed with the most common destinations so its very quick to set. Preset 1 is Navigate to Home. Preset 2 is Navigate to office and the other Navigate to the lady of my life!! - That accounts for 85% of my journeys at a single press. Jon |

I have a preset button set for 'split screen' - I tend to leave it off unless I want to see what music track is playing.

Nope, you can store almost any action in them. Navigation destinations, audio selection, phone numbers, splitscreen on/off, etc.

Arrange the "cursor" on the item you want to save, then just hold down one of the number buttons.

Thanks for that. I shall try it. So basically I need to use the idrive stick to get the option I need highlighted and then long press the button I want to store it under. Brilliant. Will that cancel this button's function as a radio preset or do these work in parallel?

Yep, exactly.
I think it cancels the radio preset, each button can only have one function.

I just took a 60 mile round trip and RTTI was not active even once. Only TMC. I did have connection to all the BMW connected iDrive options (info plus etc) but no RTTI. I do not know why, any ideas? Thanks!

I've complted around 150 miles of driving today, dwon from london to the south coast, a few short trips down there and back to London. no RTTI for the entire day.
Me thinks this is not working properly.I can't believe that there is no GPRS reception for this all day. (I think I'm right in saying its t-mobile that bmw use for this?) Looks like anoterh question for teh service department at my dealership.... Unless anyone anything else on the matter. Any fixes? |
