Replace side mirror glass
Does anyone know how to replace the side mirror glass only.
Mine was shattered and replacement glass is at the dealer. Is this a do it yourself job? |

I got mine stolen once so it's probably not difficult once you know what the trick is. Which I don't :-)
Considering how the glass looks on the inside it should be something close to the procedure for E64 here: http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/08/87/11 This is the E64 mirror: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-GLASS-...item460222191f and this the F10 mirror: http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/909/dsc07720n.jpg Putting the new one back is just press and click (this part I know from experience). easy diy. just cover a flat head screw driver well and stick it in between the bottom of the glass and frame and push down carefully so not to scratch the paint and the mirror will pop off. then disconnect the cable and you are good to go.

So... did it work? I'll have to try it myself at some point and for one I'm not clear what angle to insert the screwdriver... I imagine it should press on the base of the glass - i.e. the part which gets inserted into the mirror body, right?

I didn't even need a screwdriver.
Pops right out. There is a small plug that snaps right out. To replace - snap in plug & then the mirror. Took less than 1 minute. |

Just carefully pulled out - wiggled mirror with fingers -pops right ou
If you need a screwdriver, make sure that you place a towel between mirror frame and screwdriver to prevent damage. The price of the galss is outrageous. BMW claims that built in electronics cause the high price. |

Humm... Simply pulling did not work for me... Of course I didn't pull as hard as I could, but in my opinion hard enough....
My mirrors WERE stolen last summer and the worst thing was not that, but the fact that the electrical wires were cut, and to get a new one you have basically to buy new mirror housings. The whole thing was more than 2000 euros :-( Insurance covered, but I don't want to get through all that paperwork again. |

There are just 4 attachment points inside the mirror housing.
If the mirror is broken, I would not worry too much with being delicate in removing it. Once it is out, the replacement goes right in. Your mirror may be better seated than mine was. Just use a wide bald screwdriver to loosen the mirro. The only thing that you have to be careful of is damaging the housing. If this doesn't work, your dealer will have to do it. Good luck |
