What would YOU do? 2013 528i (prem/tech) v 2012 528i (prem/tech) - help!

My friends,

I am engaged in a huge debate with myself as to what I should do. I am going to buy a 528i through BMW's Executive Preference Program (EPP), which allows me to purchase the vehicle through my company (since it has over 500 employees) for $3,000 below dealer invoice - no questions asked (and no additional negotiation permitted).

Here are the two options I am debating between:

2013 528i
Premium Package
(316 - Power tailgate, 322 - Comfort Access system, 655 - Satellite radio, LC - Dakota Leather)
Technology Package
(609 - Navigation system, 610 - Head-up Display, 615 - Online Information Services, 6NF -Smartphone Integration, 6NR - BMW Apps, 6UH - Real Time Traffic Information, 6WA - Instrument cluster with extended contents)
MSRP: $53,795
Invoice: $49,710
Grand Total: $50,612.60 ($49,710 (invoice) - $3,000 (EPP discount) X 6% (Sales Tax) + $1,100 (dealer fees/tag))

OR

2012 528i
Premium Package
(316 Power tailgate, 319 - Universal Garage Door Opener, 508 - Park Distance Control, LC - Dakota Leather)
Technology Package
(3AG - Rear-view camera, 609 Navigation system)
& (separately added on) 6NR - BMW Apps
MSRP: $51,925
Invoice: $48,000
Grand Total $48,880.00 ($48,000 (invoice) - $3,000 (EPP discount) x 6% (Sales Tax) + $1,100 (dealer fees/tag))

Which 528i would you buy?

Ok, the most immediately apparent difference is the price: the 2013 cost $1,700 more than the 2012 (part of that is due to the $600 increase in MSRP for the 2013, and part of it is the price of the packages)

But, as you can see, the packages come with DIFFERENT items:
  • The 2013 Premium package comes with satellite radio (which I won't use - I'm a big Pandora fan), as well as the Comfort Access System - I'm not sure if I'm going to use that. But, unfortunately, the 2013 loses the Park Distance Control. What's more important?
  • The 2013 Technology package loses the Rear-view camera (which is a shame), but gains the Head-up Display, which according to some people on this forum, is the most amazing thing since sliced bread.
  • Also, the 2013 comes with the newly updated (hardware and software) navigation system (which is discussed in length here:http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=691429). This is important to me, as my understanding is that the new system will be better and faster. I'm a big technology buff.
  • And of course (still in debate), is the possibility (albeit unlikely) that the new digital multifunction instrument display (instrument cluster) might be on the new 2013 (see http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=690544) but it is not looking like it will be in the July builds.

I'm leaning towards buying the 2013, especially considering that the 2012 production run has ended, and BMW is obviously going to try to unload the remainder of them at somewhat of a discount prior to the arrival of the 2013's (but unfortunately my deal through the EPP program always remains the same - $3,000 below invoice).

THOUGHTS? Your comments are GREATLY appreciated.

If you're buying, I would lean towards the 2013. I just went through this little debacle. I was going to go with a 2012 because of the options incentive, but at the last minute my dealer ran out of allocations for 2012s. I like the packaging a bit better in the 2013 model year and I think there is some value to having the later model year for resale value if you ever choose to sell. Good luck!

I've been going through a similar dilemma.

ED invoice 2012 528i ZMP/ZPP/ZTP + heated seats + sport auto = $50100
ED Invoice 2013 528i ZMP/ZPP/ZTP/ZDA + heated seats + sport auto = $51795
The 2013 seems like the better deal for me. My build sadly loses dynamic damping and multi contour seats, but gains CA, all the cameras, HUD, better nav, possible MFID, and a few other things.

In your situation, consider that CA is something that reminds you of luxury every time you step into your car and HUD is noticed every time you drive, vs. the PDC and rear view cameras that you will use in occasional parking situations. I'd pony up for the ZDA perhaps.

2013 528i $600 msrp increase covers the now standard split folding seats and garage door opener AFAIK. I think the newer car is going to command better resale value in 5-10 years.

Agree 100%, if buying then 1700 more for a newer model year is well worth it for this priced car.

They are both 4 bangers, but that 4 banger is much better than the inline 6 of the previous 528s

Personally, I would go with the 2013 given that they will be delivered in Sept, at which point your 2012 will be a model year older. I think CA is one of those options you appreciate after you use it, but one can certainly live without it. Sat radio is another, but expected in the 5er if you were ever to sell you car, and if you listen to Howard Stern, that's a good reason to have it. HUD is a great addition to the package, but it sucks they removed the PDC option. So now, when you back up you can see through the camera but there is no warning about distance?? If that is true, its weird and I would add that as a stand alone option if I were you.

I would go for the 2013, newer model and less depreciated!

Out of curiosity, how much would a 535 be with such pricing? I say go for the upgrade if the difference isn't significant!

Everyone will have their own opinion. I personally don't like the options on the 2013. I have the premium audio on the 2012. Are you telling me that it's $4500 for the B&O audio? Otherwise you get shit audio? I do like the leather dash and alcantara headliner but I don't think you were looking at the individual option. If it is through work and you are leasing, I would get the 2012 with a few more options.

The 2012+ 528i is equipped with the new N20 4cyl twin scroll turbo engine. It delivers more torque, quicker acceleration, less weight, and better fuel economy compared to the older N/A I-6. However, we respect your opinion. The I-6 "was" a great motor.

The N54 guys love their car too, that doesn't mean the N55 replacement isn't a better built motor.

DitrasetMan: If you're buying, go with the 2013. For $1,700 more, you're getting a car from the future = higher resale value!

Go for the 2013.

Aside from getting the fold down rear seats as standard equipment which increases the trunk space tremendously, you are also getting the new updated nav system which is the foundation for future bmw updates from what i've heard.

Bmw is also constantly updating parts on the car that they don't disclose to the customer based on issues they see coming in whether it be software or hardware. Getting the latest and greatest is worth it in your case.

I would highly suggest you reconsider the Msport package and the Park distance control with rear view camera for this car. If aesthetics isn't your thing then you can forgo the Msport but the PDC and rear view camera will come in handy since the F10 is such a big car with a long nose.

Alan

There was anything wrong with the six cyl. Just saying that the N20 is definitely an improvement. Both are great in the F10!

Wow. Thank you for all of the replies. Based on the above, I am going to purchase a 2013 528i and no longer look at the 2012. I am hoping to keep this car for many years (I have been driving my current car for 13 years).

Now, my next questions involve purchasing the options (I think) I will want (at this time, never having owned a BMW before - so feel free to tell me I'm wrong).
  • I am fairly certain that I am going to want everything in the Technology package, especially since I very much want navigation and BMW Apps for my iPhone. But, I have never used a Head-up Display - is it worth it? I want to make sure that I am not paying the extra money for the Tech package just to have a toy I will never use. Otherwise, I will buy the Nav/Apps individually.
  • What are you thoughts about, in lieu of the Premium Package (invoice cost: $2,365), I just buy Dakota Leather individually (invoice cost: $1,320) and forget the Comfort Access System (I can open the door with the remote), Sirius (I dislike satellite radio with a passion) and the Power Tailgate. I see that many of you believe that the Comfort Access System is worth the money. Is that a unanimous opinion? If not, I can save $1,000 by dumping those three options. Instead, I can simply have leather and add on the Rear View Camera (invoice cost: $365), which according to my wife, "is a must." And on that point, if you had to chose between the Park Distance Control (invoice cost: $685) and the Rear View Camera (invoice cost: $365), which would you select?
  • Off the topic, since I plan on keeping this car for many years, I would like to have an extended warranty (past the 4 years that come with the car). To extend the warranty to 7 years and $100,000 miles it cost $3,900 for a warranty through BMW (the warranty that also protects the navigation system). Apparently, you can purchase the warranty at any time during the first four years of owning the vehicle (of course, the price may, but not necessarily, go up by a small amount). Anyone see a downside to me delaying to buy the extended warranty for a few years?
  • Lastly, since I plan on using my iPhone to listen to Pandora, etc. and make calls while its connected to the car, do I really need to buy the "Snap on Adapters"? To me it looks like a cradle to hold your phone in lieu of plugging the iPhone directly into the car through the cable. Apparently, you must use the adapter if you want to use the bluetooth function for listening to music, play back video, or use the car's onboard antenna. Is this all true? If so, do I need to buy it when I order the car or can I get it from the parts department at my dealership.

Thanks everyone!!

Good choice with the 2013. To your points above:
1) I am sure HUD is worth it. It would be nice to look right ahead and see all the info I need. I have never heard a negative review of HUD
2) You can live without CA, but it is a nice feature to have. I cant tell you how many times I have my hands full and I just kick to open the trunk, or just touch the handle to open the car. Its a very nice convenience. I enjoy Sat radio a lot, great variety and selection, and Howard Stern! I think SAT radio and CA will be expected in these cars in a few years anyway...
3) My theory on extended warranties is this...they sell it to make money and they always come out ahead, so basically in all likelihood, you wont. I keep my cars for a long time too. I had my e46 for 10 yrs and it was the most reliable car I ever had, only needed routine maintenance. Why not put the $3900 in the bank instead and forget about it until a rainy day?
4) I don't believe you need the snap on adapter for that, but i am not sure. Someone else here can guide you.

In regards to the snap in adapter, it is only needed for onboard antenna and video playback. You will be able to use pandora with the USB connection as long as you have the apps option. The snap in adapter can always be purchased from ebay in the future.
