Best coding options for someone in SD with no experience?

Hey guys,

I'm from San Diego and wanted to get some coding done to my car.

I've read a few posts of people meeting and such but I've been struggling to find any good options for getting some work done to my car locally.

Are there any shops that'll do it or is my best option just finding someone with a cable and some basic knowledge on what to do. If so, anyone want to help out? I can drive to you haha.

Thanks ahead of time

Well.....

Seems like new year time for a new coding session. Are you in a hurry or can you wait a couple/three weeks?

ezaircon4jc,

I'm here till the 4th then away for a couple weeks... so either this week or 3-4 weeks sounds perfect to me haha.

There's nothing major I need coded here, it's just some QOL things I'd like to fix at some point here.

I'd be in for a session as well. I just got my five series so I'm not even sure what is available yet as far as coding. Let me know if you get together.

If you're the slightest interested in DIY we can set up a coding session in the next few weeks. The only "fee" is acquisition of the ~$20 cable.

Count me in too! My fear with paying someone to do it is if the dealer takes it and refreshes the system or something...would much rather just know how to do it myself haha.

I'm in for weekends as well! Work gets super busy around tax season.

Anyways what cable do you guys have? Any in particular you'd recommend?

I'm available Jan 21/22, Jan 27/28, Feb 4/5, etc. Just let me know.

Also what part of SD are you guys in? I'm in Carmel Valley/Del Mar.

We usually meet off the 56, between the 5 & 15, IIRC Camino Del Sur exit; north side.

Here... You can also make your own. The instructions are here somewhere...

EZAirCon4JC,
Thanks for the tipper email...no I did not see this thread.

All,
I can bring three sets of the coding software, some printed how-to guides, and a homegrown coding spreadsheet tool I made on USB drives for people to copy to their laptops. The old hands can help to install and configure the software. Everyone who wants to learn to code needs a Windows (any flavor) laptop and their coding cable. Some people do offer coding as a service, for which a fee may be negotiated privately, not here. No one gets paid to teach, we all do the setup and teaching just for the fun of helping each other out.

Let's meet 1/21/2017 from 1300-1430 in the south end of the parking lot anchored by Von's on Camino Del Sur. Coordinates:
7895 Highlands Village Pl, San Diego, CA 92129

The idea is that everyone shows up at 1300 for a little discussion before we begin. If no one is there by about 1315, then we'll take it that no one is interested.

It is VERY easy to find the location. from the 56, either direction, exit onto Camino Del Sur to the north, and turn left at the first lights after the 56 interchange.

In case any of you like coffee, Peet's is in the same area, and you'll pass it on the right as you enter.

The specific area where we will meet is the south edge of the parking area at the tall retaining wall, basically the wall that holds up the 56 at that point.

I have attached a couple of how-to guides for anyone wanting to get a preview. Coding will seem foreign the first time, but the learning curve is steep, and easy to climb! If an old liberal arts guy like me can do this, anyone can!

Just bought mine...off of Amazon for a couple dollars cheaper (same thing) but I'm super excited! I'll see y'all at 1 on the 21st.

I have a MacBook Pro w/ boot camp (Windows 10) and an ethernet to firewire converter... so I'm thinking I should be fine.

Either way, amped to learn some coding here (and if not come out with a few tricks for the bimmer).

Also since you seem pretty familiar with the process, I had a quick question for you.

In regards to using the OBD2 cable to scan for error codes and the like, will I be able to do this with the OBD2-> ethernet cable I bought? What software do you generally use for this?

Might be a noob question, but I want to know in case any errors do come up down the line.

Just to make sure that I am answering your real question, is the "this" in "In regards to using the OBD2 cable to scan for error codes and the like, will I be able to do <this> with the OBD2-> ethernet cable I bought? What software do you generally use for <this>?" regarding coding, or scanning for errors?

I am not familiar with scanning for errors.

If you are asking about coding, the software is E-Sys. It is a BMW application.

Keep the questions coming. We all learn from them.
