I thought the hard drive was something like 60gb but only 12gb allocated for music cos it also stores map software etc. might be difficult to upgrade if it's like that.

Its a 2,5" 80GB TOSHIBA PATA Automotive spec hard drive (MK8050GA)

About 65GB goes to the Nav unit, the rest to Gracenote ( entertainment software), System, Speech, Contacts and user Music uploads

I have a 320GB plugged into the USB in the arm rest
If that helps
It has to be a specific USB 2 type

Be carefull
The USB ports are not rated for external hard drives.
They are not rated to provide the power required and may burn out.

You will see the owners manual warns against it

The USB will burn out or the drive?
If so how will they prove i had a HD connected to it if it burns out?

Armrest USB don't supply enough current to charge 3.5" HDDs, which require about 1.4A to spin it up from stop. that's why you see those 2 USB plugs for 3.5" external drives. nothing will burn out if you plug in 3.5" external drive to armrest USB, HDD won't spin up that's all. 2.5" drives don't require as much power and it will work on armrest USB. only problem with using HDD in the car is in the winter and summer, where temperature goes over/under rated temp, and this can cause damage or have performance drop. best bet is use SSD or big USB thumb drive.
