What is the top speed of a 550i with M-sport?

I've googled and searched the forums and all I've found is some say limited to 150mph (and I know it's higher than that) and other sites I've seen say the M Sport Package "increases speed limiter" but doesn't reference what the top speed (I imagine governed) is.

Then why does my 550 continue to accelerate and pull (no aftermarket tune) when the needle hits it's last number at 163?

Because it doesn't. German cars are known to have purposely inaccurate speedo

110% correct answer. I daily post speeds above 155mph, whats funny is I can make it happen on my speedo but not on my HUD display, it stops at 155 even when the speedo says 160.

What is the RPM reading when you first hit 155 and then does the RPM increment after initially hitting that speed? If so that would suggest to me the car is continuing to accelerate after the MPH reading.

Sounds like you can test this more often than I can so you'll have to let us know.

I hit 155 almost every day and I love it. Yes the fuel drops like a freaking rock but I never pay attention until the gas light comes on. I normally cruise around 120mph. I am very fortunate, my home is 2 miles from the autobahn, and if I head North it is unrestricted for about 45 minutes and has lots of great sloping bends and straightaways, I feel like I live in a playground. Its why I put exhaust on it, dropped it and tuned it.

The car can definately pull beyond 155, my car is tuned so that affects its powerband. Hartge wont take the limitor off, they mentioned they have been unable to but I think its more like they dont want blown engines coming back. I have had the tach get in the red when accelerating hard but my 550i runs close to 50-125mph times of a non-tuned new m5.

It doesnt keep accelerating. You WILL know when you hit a true 155mph because the car will start to lose power, it will "flutter" for a lack of better words. Plus I have my speed limit buzzer set to 155mph.

If you dont feel the flutter/hesitation, you have not reach 155mph.

I am from New York City, I got a job here in German, bought a house and never left. I say that because I am very familiar with driving in the US and I never could imagine owning a 550i (even without the tune) in the US. I wouldnt know how to begin driving it with speed limits of 55, 65 mph.

I tip my hat to you all that can, when/if I ever return to the US, I will not be bringing my car with me.

At the end of my Euro Delivery, I took my 550i M Sport out for a high-speed drive. The HUD said exactly 160 MPH. I have no idea of the revs or what the speedo said -- I was way too focused on just watching the road.

During the trip, I had routinely driven with the cruise set at 110 - 130 MPH, but the difference between that and 160 MPH was pretty intense...much more than I would have expected for a 30 MPH increment.

And driving at US speeds S&*KS after driving the car on the roads it was designed for.

I got my 550xi from Germany. When driving back home I hit the limiter twice, but it was at speeds above 250km/h (155mp/h) according to the speedo. Something like 260+, which however was exactly 250km/h according to a GPS tracker.

So at least on my car there is limiter at approximately 250km/h, but the real ones, not the speedo numbers.

Offtopic - Driving in Germany is INSANE : )

BMWUSA.COM show 155mph as on option just like all 550i sold outside North-America. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx

You can get the 155mph limiter on none M-Sport cars as well. On the 546 to this day built 550i/6 have 427 of them the 155MPH limiter and only 213 cars have M-Sport Package.

During my ED my 550xi accelerated strongly to 150mph and then just stayed at that speed. I found driving at 140mph more comfortable, since I had speed adjustability in both directions. Now that my car is back in the States, it has Dinan and no speedlimiter. Unfortunately there's no opportunity to test it.

Bump.

I have a buddy with a 2014 550I sport package and it is limited to 130MPH! Shouldnt it be 155 since its a sport model?

And no, its not X drive either. RWD only.

Any clue why his is limited to 130?

No. It was pulling hard and just stopped dead in its tracks at 130 with plenty of room to go.

Speedo's can be up to 10% out (intentionally by manufacturer), therefore theoretically you could have an indicated reading of up to 170.5 mph on the speedo. The best way of checking is to use a GPS device vs the speedo, prior to having sat nav in my recent cars I used a Tom Tom and this always showed up the inaccuracies in the speedo.

If the car has the "all season tires" instead of the "performance tires", then it gets the lower speed limiter because the all-seasons aren't rated for higher speeds. Regardless of M-Sport or RWD.
