19in to 20in wheels - Do I need alignment?

I just purchased the 20inch 312 Ferric Gray Wheels and the dealer is telling me I need to have the car realigned (at $350) because of the jump from 19 to 20. He says I will wear through tires very quickly. I was curious and called another dealer and got a different answer. Which was "I don't need it!"

Any advice?

My dealer swapped stock 18's for 356 20's and no alignment was needed. They only had to balance the wheels.

The only reason you would need to realign a vehicle is if it already has bad tire wear or you adjust any kind of suspension components. Upsizing wheels would not alter the suspension.

I'll buy your 19" rims if they are for sale.

An alignment no! but a good balancing yes!

I had my new rims fitted and they did a crappy job of balancing the wheels...as a result I had wobble at higher speeds.

Had the balancing done again with a Hunter road force machine and the wobble is gone.

I was told that road force isn't necessary on new rims/tires....I beg to differ

I don't know about in your case, but on a previous X5, I went from the stock 19" to 20" wheels and the alignments was way off...as a result the interior edges of the tires wore down very quickly and I had to ditch them even though there was good tread left. I'd say it's worthwhile to have the alignment checked when going up a size as the alignments specs are likely different for the 20" wheel/tire set.

You don't need to get an alignment unless the alignment was off with your old wheels...

Why would increasing the wheel size have any effect on the alignment?

Hint: It doesn't...
