Dingolfing f10 factory 2nd best in Europe.South Africa 3 Series factory best in world

From BMW press

Quote:
Best car factory in the world.

Beyond vehicles as such, J.D. Power and Associates also assesses car assembly plants around the world in terms of their production standards. Here the critical factor is the number of faults and malfunctions arising in cars delivered to customers.

This year’s accolade for the world’s best assembly plant went to the BMW plant in Rosslyn, South Africa, where the BMW 3 Series is built: for this achievement BMW AG was presented with the Platinum Plant Quality Award 2015.

In addition, BMW Plant Dingolfing – which produces the BMW 3 Series, BMW 4 Series and BMW 5 Series – received the Silver Plant Quality Award 2015, making it the second-best car factory in the Europe/Africa region after BMW Plant Rosslyn. The Initial Quality Study thus also showed BMW Dingolfing to be the best car plant in Europe.

J.D. Power and Associates is among the world’s leading market research companies and regularly assesses satisfaction levels among vehicle buyers in the main international car markets.
From Autoweek
Quote:
The study, which only includes assembly plants producing vehicles for the U.S. market, showed the Rosslyn plant with an average defect rate of 15 per 100 vehicles.
BMW's Dingolfing 01 factory in Germany, which produces the 3-, 4- and 5-series cars, earned a Silver award with an average of 21 defects per 100 cars.

After BMW's South African facility, the plants with the fewest number of defects are operated by Toyota in Ontario, Canada (17 per 100) and Kyushu, Japan (18 per 100), while Kia earned a Gold award for its Kwangju plant in Korea (17 per 100).

So 15% and 21% of all cars produced from the top two factories have defects and this is considered good?

My thoughts exactly.. I'm assuming these are defects that they catch during quality control, not defects that actually make it to delivery? Meaning, defects before that final quality check are more common that we might expect, and don't make it out of the plant... At least I would hope that's what it means.

Yes, defects usually caught at port or dealer or reported early by customers.
Most defects are minor though. Can be anything not 100%, like a slightly scew or loose trim piece or squeak from the dash.

Rarer problems could be shipping related damage or engine/transmission faults.

Makes you think about the defect rates from under performing factories.
Most are minor "defects" though

I remember when I bought my e46 back in '02 and I was on the Bimmer boards and everyone was praying that they wouldn't get allocated a car that would be manufactured in SA. All wanted one that was produced in Germany because it would be more reliable, LOL! Anyway, my SA manufactured e46 was the most reliable car I ever owned.
