F31 vs F10 car boot size

Hello,

I know they are different cars, but how does the car boot size and practicability compare between the 2?

many thanks,
Vince

Just to clarify, you do mean going from 3-series touring to 5-series saloon?

In any case, I'd suggest getting along side both, as only you know exactly how you use the boot space. Easy access could be the key difference for practical use.

Yes.

I owned an E91 Alpina D3. I've been adviced to go for a F10 or F11 520d/525d in the future, but I'n not sure I need a big car as the F11.

Thanks

Isn't that just a perception, the touring being a bigger car than the saloon? The F11 is the same outline dimensions as the F10 saloon. Exactly the same footprint, with easy to use boot space.

The F31 boot doesn't seem that big compared to something like an Octavia. I've gone for an F11 as I prefer the looks of the Estate and wanted the big boot with lower loading height.

Recently sold my F10 and have an F31 on order. Somewhere to put the dog was my main driver, but having been an checked out the F31 beforehand I was surprised at it's size.

Certainly didn't feel like a significant drop in interior space up front and the rear felt pretty much identical, if not bigger, although the higher roofline may be responsible for this perception.

The boot will be far more practical for my needs of course.

The leap from E90 to F10 felt a much bigger jump.

Yes, the F31 sounds like a cement mixer full of bricks.

I liked the F31 320d N47, was much quieter and seemed more refined then my E92 320d even though they have the same engine. I was going to order a F31 with the B47 190 engine but offers were better on the F11.

I've had two F10s and one F31 with the same engine - the F10s are silent inside and sound like a London Taxi outside. The F31 sound like a Taxi inside and a rock crusher on the outside.

Garage List
I had to make this exact decision when I chose my current company car (a 520D F10).

On paper the total size of the F10 is bigger than the F31 with the cover pulled over.

BUT

The F10 does not come with fold down rear seats as standard!

As i was not allowed to spec any options on my car, it never crossed my mind to look at the options list thus I never spotted it.

So for 95% of the time, the boot on my 5 it great. It is easy to access, has a big opening and holds loads. When we drove into France last summer I got as much if not more than I did when I did the same trip in my E91 a few years ago so all good.

But there is that odd occasion (such as Ikea) where the lack of a fold down seat plus the height of a tourer is a real killer.

So if you are buying new, make sure you go for folding seats and if buying used, watch out as it appears most people do not select the folding seat options

When I was looking for an e90 about 5 years ago, a folding back seat was a must, although in the 4 years I had the car I probably only used it a couple of times, so with the F10 I didn't bother. 8 months later I've realised just how useful it was, folding it down made access to the rear window for cleaning sooo much easier, cleaning the F10 back window is a total pita

In the F3x both sound dreadful because of almost non-existent sound insulation - don't be fooled that the six pot is much better. Tyre and wind noise is also significantly worse.

I guess some of the lack in refinement is deliberate, many 3-series drivers seem to want noise as part of the 'sporty' experience.

Take the fake exhaust enhancement for inside the car, what's that about, if not making for a less refined drive?

Many have commented the latest 3-series is too refined and detached from the feel they want. I sense some conflicts for BMW pitching it 'just right' for the wider market.

The lack of refinement is a key reason I went back to a 5-series.

I'll be joining you, Pete. You might be right, although how anyone could desire the noise I'm talking about - if that's BMWs intention - is beyond me.

It's a shame because the F31 is a great drive in other respects.

Lack of refinement nearly drove me away from the BMW brand, my F30 was very disappointing in this respect.

After test driving an F10 I can't believe how different the same engine can be in 2 cars!

Love how this has gone from a topic of boot size to a F30/31 refinement bashing thread! Not got mine yet so can't comment, not blind to the fact it's not going to be in the same class as the F10 though. Different beasts!

Boot size is OK although not class-leading - my lab is not too impressed for long journeys but may be he hates the noise too....

Some have said that the interior quality of the F3x is inferior to the F1x but I don't see that - it may be auto-suggestion. The F3x would be excellent with an extra £100 worth of sound insulation - there really is no excuse for it sounding as it does.

Clearly there is something in the design brief that allows for more NVH than is necessary.

Take the sound deadening part at the back end of the front wings to the door shut. Only some 3-series models were fitted with the part. (Not sure how that stands for the LCI, but was the case). What is that about? Why would it be missing from the petrol models and only fitted to the diesels? Surely the quieter the better? There must have been a decision to say petrol models were quiet enough without the sound deadening parts, components which were already in the parts bin, but deliberately excluded from some builds.

Yep. I added another sheet of under-bonnet insulation which has helped but the inner-wing and bulkhead would make the biggest difference to the cabin but that's impossible to retrofit.
