what to do

so i have had my f10 n47 ED 520D nearly 3 years this april. ive only done 24,000 in it and am more than likely going to purchase at the end of my PCP deal.

have been having a look at some extended warranties and although they get the worst reviews click4warranties is £670ish for 3 years which seems cheap. ive had aa one previously that have always been good.

Im a little concerned at the DPF issues that are well documented. I dont do that many long runs but my commute is 10-15 mins of 50-70mph roads although sometimes this is more (time) if congested. Ive not had any issues really with the car so far.

Maps are a joke but i think i can get an update from some things ive read? Can i just ask BMW to do this before my warranty is up? any tips for trying to maintain best health?

Any advice would be most appreciated. I love the car and is everything i need. I d see no reason not to have it another 5+ years tbh. Last one i had spat its turbo dummy out at 100k so assume this is no different?

re warranty , I am in a similar position with a 4 yr old car and 21000 miles. no right answer and basically a gamble but I took the decision to self insure. I had a e39 previously for 10 years and that only ever needed a new alternator so am basing my gamble on that.

re maps yes you can sort out an update , if you do some googling you can find how, you will need esys along with a cable. did it myself so can speak with authority on that.

Oil change every 8-10k regardless of what the book says and service it well, I have a number of garages as clients and they all say long interval oil changes are what kill cars.
To illustrate the point one let me take his 2005 Audi A6 with 380k on the clock for a spin and it felt as tight as my 3 year old F10.

Mine does 30k a year and im fully intending to get at least 250k out of it before we part ways. Cost me to much money not to get some value from it.

While it doesnt effect me due to the miles I do they also said DPFs will last well as long as they get a good run every month or so to clear them out.

For the warranty, I decided to self insure and stick £100 aside each month in the hope I never need it and it can be the deposit for my next car

also the warranty doesn't cover the maps. BMW will gladly sell you an updated to your maps but it won't be cheap.

Thanks guys. Ive read lots of different stuff so great to get some real life experience. For instance dpf needs 30 mile above 50mph run every 3 starts!?!? It gets a good run most weeks so hopefully that'll be ok. Thanks for heads up on oil changes its due its second now but will then be looking at every 10k or so as you say.

ill check out maps, i don't actually use it tbh but wondered if i can get BMW to update them with maybe some good will whilst still in warranty. ill check with them and then do it myself after reading the tech on here.

I might just do the AA or RAC type parts and labour as i normally get full cover with cashback for about £150 for me and wife anyway. Ive used that before without drama for a new turbo. I had to get towed 180 miles to do it but every little helps! Ha

I've read a lot about the DPF and am still not very clear about how often it "kicks in". I'm sure other more knowledgable here will be able chip on on that. I've only ever noticed it a few times when I've returned home and heard the underside of the car clicking away and a feint smell. Other than that it's transparent to me.

I think dpf regen is, on average, about every 200 miles.

I have the BMW insured warranty on a 37000ml 330i and it cost me 25 pounds a month and its already paid out on a gearbox.
the hassle of paying first and then claiming it back is tedious methinks.
the maps for my f11 i got from

hope this helps
