Autohold is for automatics to stop the "creep" when stopped and still in Drive.

Optionally you can apply the handbrake and just press the accelerator to release - no need to depress the handbrake button to release. Ref loss of night vision -I don't believe it's possible with red light due to the way the rods in your retina work. Dazzled maybe but no loss of night vision.

Can you? I can't. I get a gong and an instruction to release the parking brake.

May be to do with how the handbrake is applied, if you use auto hold and switch off the car, the handbrake is automatically applied, perhaps in this situation you can release by driving off. When you apply the handbrake deliberately yourself then try to drive off perhaps this is when it won't let you, perhaps this is when it has to be released manually.....just guessing....haven't experimented yet

Mine (2014) lets me drive off. If I'm not wearing the seatbelt, I get the bong and nothing happens.

Mine definitely releases when I depress the accelerator even on start up in the morning. I have had the odd occasion when the car doesn't allow it.

Me too. If handbrake is on, select drive again, handbrake off and then away.

The above the OP is making, I don't either. I use auto hold all the time, fantastic feature, and would prefer the lights to be off as standard, and then if a car roars up behind me, I can tap the brake pedal as often as I want to to warn them I am thee, like I have done for the 20 years of driving prior to the F10!!!!

Err... Last night the above was true because I tried it. This morning it isn't. I can happily stop, engage the parking brake and then just drive off when I want. My problem is solved so "thank you, njc". So if you want the brake lights on you can use Autohold and the control-freaks amongst us can use their chosen combination of parking brake and foot brake.

I suspect I'm going to spend a lot of this evening sat in my car trying to work out why this didn't work last night. My neighbours already think I'm unhealthily car-obsessed because I wash it by hand.

No problems - I even read the manual today to check and yes it's in there. Excuse grainy pics. Mine is a 2014 F11.

Quite correct! Red lighting is used when you want to protect your night vision

I've never had an issue with brake lights on on the car in front. I don't purposefully look at them once i've stopped though, but I always notice when they go out. I actually use this
in traffic so I know when he's ready to move and I can get ready too.

Unless the guy in front had just put his handbrake on in which case he might finish up with a BMW in his boot

that would be an improvement to most cars then

Interesting convo here as I only use it when a train is crossing but never thought about whether or not the brake lights are on?
