Styling and no MT option kills the S6 for me.

Better leather, more of it, alcantara headliner, additional colours for the leather. The feeling inside is very luxurious.
I have to disagree with the "FAR more luxurious" statement. A bit more leather in different colors is FAR from more luxurious. The interiors (similarly configured) are almost identical.

Come on now...

However, be prepared to support the premium. Service has to be followed to the word. Driving on suspect roads becomes a white-knuckle chore - I have a hell of a time with potholes with the 19" wheels on my 535i, and can't even imagine what I'd have to deal with on a M5's 20" rims (although my GT-R had more durable RFT's than the crap on my 5-series).

So in summary - while the M5 looks like a 5-series with fancy wheels and a body kit, there is MUCH more. Watch the video from an early (Spring? Summer? 2012) engineering walk-through/reveal and you'll learn about all of the unique parts.
Screw all of those unique parts....I would just spend an extra 30k for the "kids will take photos" aspect.

Also, can you tell us how you are so intimate with both the M5 and 550i, when you drive a 535? And pls leave out the "former GTR owner", as it has nothing to do with this thread. I owned an e92 M3, and besides the 1200 mile service (same for M5), service is almost identical to non-M cars.

Personally, I feel like I made a huge mistake with the 550. I love the car but wish I had just done the m5.

I went with the 550 to keep a lower profile as I'm currently building a house and for a couple other reasons. I got the mod bug way worse than I intended to and it feels kind of dumb modding a car that isn't the best. i planned on doing wheels and maybe dinan stage 2, then i found this forum... and it was all over. I personally am not a believer in trying to "catch up" with a higher model but that is exactly what I'm ending up doing.

That being said, I do love my 550 and I will enjoy it until I get my M5 when the next model comes out in 5 years or so.

If the money isn't a big deal I'd go m5. If your looking at resale and your car as an investment, you've picked the wrong brand.

I've enjoyed so much having AWD in the snow this winter that I'm confident I made the right choice going with the 550 over the M5 on my recent order.

If I ever buy an M car, it will be for summer only. So it probably won't be the M5 but something more sporty like the M6 (or M2 if it ever comes to market). If not an M, probably a P car.

Good to hear. Assume you were pleased with your 535xi. Wanna keep my '12 for a decent number of years.

The M5 is *less* luxurious:

1. Ignoring the fact you could probably special order any BMW leather in any BMW car, the leather differences are really only color differences, not quality differences. You can't get Venetian Beige in the M5. You can't get Sakhir Orange in the 550. But all of the best leathers, the individuals, those colors are exactly the same for both.

2. You can't get ceramic controls in the M5. This is strictly a luxury/quality item, not a color item.

So really, if you configured the very best interior you could for each car, the 550 would be slightly more luxurious because of the ceramic controls.

I've *loved* my 535xi (it's a 2008). It's the reason I stuck with the 5 series. I'll be sad to see it go when the 550 arrives.

One guy on here said the 550 was a piece of crap and get the M5. Dont know what the hell he was thinking. Well maybe his 550 was crap, but mine was badazz and I got nothing but compliments. I had the e60 550 and it no only handled great, looked great but had awesome power. Now, the power is not the M5, but none the less, the 550 is a good car. All you have to do is fork over the money to get what you want. Doesn't matter what we think you should buy, get what your wallet and lifestyle will afford you. Provided is a pic of my old 08 550.
