Yes, cars are very expensive in Norway, and also in Denmark.

Hi, i guess u r from Norway then. I have read once that Norwegian will import a bmw with low hp then install a bigger engine when its in Oslo or anywhere inside Norway. Is that true? As I know, Norwegian tax is based on horsepower, car weight, and also CO2 emission rt? And also what about Denmark? How much is one 520d in Denmark?

It's well known that car prices in Asia are outrageously expensive. However, we Malaysians get better spec cars than Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia etc. For example, our MY2014 F10 gets LCI as well as the digital instrument cluster, 4-zone climate control, LED lights - standard from 520d onwards - and many more.

Only thing I wish for is that BMW Malaysia allows us to option our cars as we see fit.

Yes, we've a progressive car tax bases on hp, weight and CO2.
I believe the tax in Denmark is a percentage of the total car value, meaning you also have to pay tax on the options in the car.

Don't now how common it's to change the engine after import.

Checked the prices in Denmark, and a 520d starts at about 100000 USD, about 15000 more than here.

Yup, not many Malaysian actually know that our standard spec is actually high spec even in Europe. However, i agreed with u that we should have be like Europe where we can add on specific preferred options.

Some correction to the fact stated about Singapore BMW cars,

1) the price quotes are all in SIN dollars, as such the prices are as follows:-

520i $220k or USD175k
528i $240k or USD191k
535i $300k or USD240k

Still expensive though…

2) the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) in Singapore allows you to drive the car for 10 years and depreciate accordingly. Which means at the end of 10 years… you WILL NOT get any money back. This COE is already factored into the sale of the car prices as indicated above. Not that anyone cares….

Cheers!

It is not common to change the engine after import to Norway. If we do, we'll still have to pax increased taxes on the new engine, so it will not pay off.
Extremely few will take the chances to drive without reporting the new engine as you will get fined an insane amount of money if you get caught.

That said, I just bought a 520D F10 with leather, M-pack, and some other fun options... the price here was 122k $ in todays currency rates.

For that price I'm sure I could get a pretty nice BMW in the states

Wow even though I am kinda sad that we have to pay hefty price to own a BMW. But look at the bright side, at least we know we have the ability to buy any ultra luxury level car in the state or in Europe. Not a prob at all for Asian at least, to drive something like Maserati or Aston Martin in the State or Europe. Since the cost over there is so cheap.

What do you suppose the average BMW F10 owner in Thailand earns in a year though? Its all relative. If you make $250,000/year in Thailand and buy a $115,000 car, is it much different than the American who makes $150,000/year and buys a $66,000 F10?

U dont use the money u earned to buy a car. U used the money u have safe. Because, cars are liability. In Malaysia, most ppl will buy with 5 years loan. After installment done then u can scrap or trade in.

All the cars I've owned throughout my life I took 9 years loan - Including my F30 320i - with the exception of my F10 in which I only have to pay 5 years.

Why cant you fly to Munich and pick one up from there and get it imported? I dont know if that would make a difference.

Cars are a liability (depreciating asset) everywhere. Malaysia is no different and as you point out, people in Malaysia finance their cars over 5 years 9someone else posted 9 years). So the question I posed is still relevant; how much does the average person in Thailand or Malaysia make in a year (who drives an F10)? Maybe the most difference is relative? Of maybe people in that part of the world, don't mind spending 60% of their annual income to drive a BMW.

In north america, most people live like our governments - on borrowed money - for life, paying interest.

Ok first of all, are u Malaysian? Well, let me explain. Most ppl in Malaysia who drives BMW usually but with 5 years loan. Its a norm, with some better off will buy with 3 years perhaps? It depends how much down payment you are willing to pay? And to answer your question, in Malaysia those who drives BMW maybe earning USD 150k - 300k annually. But like i said, we don't buy a car based on that year's income. We will probably planned 3 - 4 years ahead to save up for the down payment. Therefore, it can minimized our loan and also installment. Average interest rate is around 1.6 - 2.5%. Most of us have to plan ahead due to high cost living in capital as we don't enjoy good welfare like our European counterpart. Our government is currently busy 'sucking' as much money as they can.

Well, i can fly to Munich and get one full specced. But once I have imported bak to my country, the custom will also impose import tariff on the car, and we have to bare the shipment cost. So it will end up paying extra. As our government will not skip a chance where there is a opportunity to collect money from its citizen.

Owh, to me i wouldn't wanna be tied up on 9 years. Besides, by the time ur loan end. Ur car is way outdated. So in order to protect the residual value, i reckon stick at 5-6 years loan. Or leasing. MB Malaysia is offering lease term on the new E class.

Compared to most other places in the world, the USA 2.5% car import tariff is peanuts, typically much smaller than the local states hit you up for in sales taxes. But, even those combined, are trivial compared to what most people elsewhere pay. While that tax doesn't show up on the sticker...it's built into the prices, and yes, you do pay it on vehicles imported into the USA. It's lots more on trucks, and slightly more on motorcycles...one reason most trucks sold in the USA are made here, regardless of the manufacturer's home country (truck tariff is 25%, motorcycles 3.5%).

In Europe, the VAT is many times more than the tariff we pay...one reason why we can get the vehicles for less. Shipping costs are in the noise when vehicles are shipped in bulk - in the USA, the charge to get it from the port to the dealer includes various services.

No, I don't think it's expensive in Sweden. You don't have any car tax except the 25% vat tax (moms).

I see that a F11 520xd is 431900 sek, but in Norway it's 615900 nok, and I see that options are a bit more her too.
