Here's a rather long discussion of the topic - http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/engine-break-in.htm.

The most salient advice in the article is, "My suggestion is to follow the owner's manual written by the people who made your car."

Look in the index to your owner's manual to find break-in procedures.

The first few hundred miles of the car's life, just take it easy. No hard acceleration and braking. All the car's moving parts take a few hundred city equivalent miles to mate (wear) evenly and appropriately (i.e. gears, clutch, brakes, engine rings, etc.).

After 5k miles, get an oil change from BMW then you can drive it as hard as you like.

I know it isn't required to change the oil between the recommended intervals, I do it anyways. It's cheap insurance against engine wear.

During my BMW factory tour, the guide stated BMW does not dyno each engine, nor do they even run the engine prior to installation. To save money all they do is a simple pressure test, so I have some doubts about the accuracy of the linked article. If the engines were dyno'd at the factory, then I would consider following the break-in procedure. Since BMW doesn't do this initial step, I break in my engines under load, which normally means 150mph on the Autobahn. I know it goes against BMW's recommendation in the manual, but I do what works for me. BTW, burning oil should not be considered normal for a BMW.

There is no modern evidence that an oil change before the BMW indicated one (after 30k kms) is any better for the engine. These hypotheses are based on old school motor maintenance. Taken the car through his first thousand kms without needless overstraining of any moving parts makes the engine parts adjust at the proper way, ie without unwanted wear. A fully warmed up new BMW motor will stand up to a stretch of autobahn on max speed, but what works for d, is not a recommendation by BMW. Or any other engine builder I know of. Some new cars burn a little oil the first thou kms, so check your levels and replenish if asked for. Most BMWs do not keep burning oil, if any, after they are run in.

To d, man you are right, when doing ED.
Ofcourse you will want to test the new baby fully.
So if the 150Mph autobahn test fails, lets say you blow the engine with it, you leave the wreck in Bavaria instead of hauling over a useless pile of rubbish to the States.
Everybody should do it this way!

It is just like a new girlfriend, when you will start the relation by taking the stick to her from the beginning you will end up very soon with an ugly bitch.
In the manual you'll find the run in time, it is less than 5k.
My F11 was run in and driven freeely after 2k kms.

Mpg is depending on driving style, normally fuell efficiency rises a bit after the engine is driven somewhat longer. I would not worry about your engine, or did you get any alarms whilst flocking it around last week? If not forget it all together and enjoy your new car.
Rtfm, you'll learn a lot of things to enjoy your car even more.

I broke in my last three cars on the Autobahn. If the motor is not ready for the Autobahn, then it's not ready for me. The good part is that if there was a major failure, I wouldn't need to wait for the parts to be shipped from Germany.

Back in the good old days, BMW 2002's used to come from Germany with a large outward-facing decal on the rear window saying "Running-In" - - presumably to alert lead-foots behind not to run over the pussy-foots in front. Then for a long while, BMW had break-in instructions (basically the same as now) on a decal in the upper left hand corner of the windshield for the edification of the driver. Now BMW has the procedure buried in the Owner's Manual (which practically no one reads). This gradual devolution of the break-in procedure is probably a reflection of the greatly improved manufacturing and machining processes of today that minimize the need for careful break-in.

FWIW, the link I gave was to an article on a VW diesel forum. VW makes the TDI diesel at its Wolfsburg factory not only for all the variants of VW diesels cars, but for Audi's, Skoda's, and Seats, as well. I don't know total production numbers, but it would be impracticable for VW to break-in all these engines at the factory. I've been told by someone that visited the factory, that they only run the US-bound diesels on a dyno - - out of deference to our speed and traffic safety laws which would prohibit breaking-in the diesels here at Autobahn speeds. They run the US diesels at wide open throttle until blue smoke starts to pour out of every orifice and pore, at which point the engine is said to be broken-in.

How about swapping cars for a week and see if you actually have the same driving style.

Fixed it for ya.

To the OP. I'd drive it the same way you intend to drive the car past the "magical" break in period.

If not following break in procedures found in the manual actually caused damage to your car the world would be littered with broken cars on the side of the road because most owners don't know what break in even means, let alone read their owners manual.
