I back to back tested RWD (no xDrive here in the UK), a 530d (your 535d) vs. a 535i. I came away more impressed with the 535i than the 530d.
A bit of background... I was driving a 330d, had it for over 6-years, so very familiar with the way a diesel works in the real world, mpg, etc. What impressed me was the NVH was so much better in the 535i, engine refinement is at another level. I now only drive about 8,000 miles a year in my own car, so diesel is not essential for cost savings, therefore I chose the 535i. Even though dominated by preference for diesel over here in the UK these days, not regretted it for one minute. My observations for running a diesel in colder climates, mpg suffers badly in winter months, engine warm up is so slow, diesels are not suited to lots of short trips and cold running. If it is a keeper, think about DPF regenerations and the engine getting contaminated with the gunk and goo which can accumulate inside the engine. If you are a high mileage user and drive decent distances in one hit from cold, diesel makes so much sense for a little compromise in NVH levels. HighlandPete |

I love it. It's really unrefined compared to gas. It's got lots of resonance zones where things inside the cabin will buzz as you zip through the rev range. But, its this scrappy unrefined character that makes it so sweet. Driving a new BMW diesel adds a different dimension to your driving. The torque is fantastic. I lost over 200 HP and it's hard for me to tell. I have the xdrive. You will be blown away by the diesel. The diesel feels less lag laggy because your pushed back in your seat at 2k. If buzzes annoy you then you might get irritated. But, the absolute coolest feature is that you can joy ride all around: guilt free! 750 miles per tank baby! |

BMW Finance was a bit picky with me, I have a good credit score but after they spoke to my employer, everything got cleared up.
I got a nice deal on a 4 year lease with a clear option to opt out after 3 years. Just in time for the next generation 5 or 7 :-) Taking delivery on June 6th |

Thanks!
I am coming from a Nissan and owed it for 14 years. So for me, any BMW is an improvement LOL. |

The diesel is half a second quicker to 100kmh. 0.6 in fact. I personally think a powerful diesel is perfect for an executive express. As for the noise....it's negligible....and I'm not sure why it bothers anyone anyway.

If I had wanted diesel for higher mileage use, I'd probably have gone for the 535d. More smiles! HighlandPete |

DON'T get the diesel! NO way! I've had both, and after many years of driving BMW sweet sixes, I thought I wanted a diesel. HUGE mistake.
You lose all the refinement and sweetness that makes BMW, BMW. Get the gas 535. DON'T listen to the torque bullshit, DON'T listen to the gas milage... the extra cost and extra diesel cost makes the extra mpg a moot point. I got out of my 535d in 4 months and am now in a 535i. smooth like a BMW, sounds like a BMW, revs like a BMW. Don't fall for the diesel bull shit. PM me your phone number.... I'll speak with you on the phone. |
