Harsh Ride, Crazy Amount of Sway, Butt Hurts

Hey everyone...

question for ya all..

So i have a 2011 535i .... and it hurts like shit...

every single bump i go off it hurts like hell in the cabin as if im driving a rock with no cushioning...

Ball joints, control arms, links, sway bar all looks good... Struts arent leaking ..

is it the struts? springs??

everything is stock...

if its a huge bump like a road height difference it feels like im being thrown off a roller coaster.....

please someone help

are you on factory wheels as well? from some of the issues you're having i would have to assume your struts are shot especially the last one you said about being thrown off a roller coaster! does it feel like you're on a boat just kinda wavy up and down? what's your odometer reading?

Yes it does have the wavy feeling on a boat if the road has waves.... i dont feel rigid and planted.... like im floaty yet every bump hurts like shit....

I have 80,000 on the odo everything stock!!!

Yes factory wheels: 18in with RFT (i am waiting to buy new ones without RFTs)...

Also on cold mornings... i hear a spring like sound when i go off speed bumps.... also when turning the steering i hear a spring like nosie

Just because the struts aren't leaking externally doesn't mean they are still damping as engineered. Sad to say most modern BMW's factory struts are well past their prime by 100k.

Since you have an X-Drive and live in the rust belt I wouldn't discount the possibility of a broken coil spring either, but typically that manifests in a visual manner as well. eg the vehicle leans to one side.

Yes i do know that struts can be worn / failing without a sign of leaking...

I just hate how they dont have many coilover options for x drive cars ... i would've swapped out already....

I also cant find aftermarket shock abosrber replacements anywhere ....

There isnt any lean from what ive seen parking on a flat surface.....

Its just annoying and hurts like crap and everything in my car shakes and makes noise cause theres absolutely no damping and crazy amount of sway when cornering at 40 + mph.

From your description it sounds like one or more dampers have lost internal nitrogen charging and are simply bottoming out over heaves in the road. It happens.

Regardless its something you're going to need to have diagnosed in person to be sure.

is there an easy/reliable way to test the shocks?

if the shocks are gone - is it routine to replace the springs at the same time? assuming top mounts would be done too?

Easiest way...visibly check for leaks. 2nd way...drive it...it'll feel lime you're on a boat.
