Done with run flats !!!

It's odd, on my E90 I never had an issue with the Bridgestone RFTs since over had the car. It has 17" for summer and Dunlop RFT for winter. No issues in 4 years.
On my F10 I just had my second bulge in 3 months on the Goodyear 19" wheels. Rather than replace another one, I replaced all 4 with Continental DWS.
So far I find they ride smoother but they are stiffer then I expected. Maybe the tire pressure is too high.
Crossing my fingers that I will be trouble free with these tires.

I cannot believe what garbage those Goodyear tires are!

you know if you hit up Goodyear they would of given you free tires. I got them.
You think they would want to see their brand on the web like this? LOL

I've replaced 2 of them, 1 the dealer was nice enough to change. Those Goodyear tires are garbage. I have kept one as a spare, and when its time to change them all I'm switching brands, never had issues splitting with any other Run Flat.

Just swapped out my Goodyear RFT's for Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's. Couldn't be happier! My car has just over 13k miles and I've already had three of the tires replaced. Luckily, I bought the tire/wheel insurance. It is truly amazing to me that BMW continues to use RFT's, and even more bewildered that they put those P.O.S. Goodyear's on their cars!

Yeah the Good Year RFTs on our F10s are the worst tires ever. I have replaced 6 of them before deciding on switching to another brand. Guess what? problem solved. Hadn't had any other bulges since. Luckily, I too had the tire insurance and therefore did not have to shell money for these terrible tires!

That original picture, did you hit a pothole or train tracks maybe at a bit of speed, or do these tires just bubble for no apparent reason ?

I'm also curious if this is common to 19"+ size rims (thin sidewall, easier to damage perhaps) or happens on 17 and 18" as well.

Being a client advisor for BMW, I am able to see which tires are the worst. The Goodyear eagle 19" tires are 90% of the problems I face with clients. A very good client of mine just had 2 blowout on him on his 6er GC, replaced all 4 with Michelins. I have goodyears on mine (albeit in 18" form) with 10,000 miles (no issues, knock on wood!) but I am just waiting for them to go bad any day now. No faith in them at all, BMW really needs to re-evaluate using them as a tire vendor.

I did hit a pothole that caused that... it was a pothole in both cases. Regardless, it should have held up much better. Fortunately in both cases the rim was not bent.

I'm going to play the Devil's advocate here:

I put 20" Michelin PSS tires on my car with 255/35's in front and 295/30's on the rear and the car now telegraphs more road noise than the Michelin Primacy HP's that were on there before.

I like the idea of the runflats, I like knowing that if I have a puncture or air leak I can make it to a repair facility and not have to change the tire. This is even more beneficial in inclement weather. For example, my wife called me all hysterical a couple of weeks ago that the TPMS light came on and didn't want to drive the car as she didn't want to damage the rim and she had her mom who has Alzheimer's and gets freaked out real easily. Luckily she was close by I and came with the air compressor to pump it up, or if needed, I could change the tire (I bought at spare and jack kit from Bimminan that I keep in the car). Luckily it was slow leak, the tire had 29 psi and tripped the TPMS light. I filled her up to 36 psi and she was on her way. I took it to get patched later that day and it's all good.

I don't do any tracking or racing, or need the super high speed rating, but I do like the look the wider lower profile tires give the car, but for convenience and piece of mind, I know that I'm in the minority, I do prefer the run-flat.

I'll add my thoughts as well .
Whilst I'm not keen on the ride quality that they give I do like the advantage they given when you do have a puncture.
I've had my car just over 2 years with 13000 miles and have had 2 punctures, both on the same rear wheel as it happens.

On the second occasion , I travelled around 400 miles on a flat at up to motorway speeds which is far in excess of the recommendations.
In retrospect , it was not a good idea and perhaps I was lucky but it does show how tough the tyres are. In terms of not stranding you, you'll only going to appreciate it / when it happens to you, particularly if where it happens is not a good area or the weather is foul.

I'd like the best of both worlds but I guess you just have to make your choice.

I have Michelin Primacy on 19inch wheels by the way.

You are not in the minority, most BMW owners leaves their runflats on. I also like the idea of being able to drive to a safe area after getting a flat. Runflats on BMW have such a bad reputation because of those Good Year Eagle LS2, I have the Conti runflats and never had a problem, they also ride softer. Having Xdrive, I never felt the need for more traction or summer tires. Much like you, I do not track my car.

I agree with the peace of mind of run flats but I just had it with those good years. I actually have a Continental Mobility kit in my trunk as well as a tire repair kit if I did get a puncture.

Since I deleted the runflats, I keep a small road emergency kit in the trunk that includes a small air compressor that plugs into cigarette lighter, and also a bottle of Slime tire sealant.

This is a better solution than runflats since it will only take a few minutes to be back on the road for as long as I need to be, and better yet won't have to purchase a new tire as in the case of a runflat.

Not all flats are repairable by a slime kit.

Slime kits mess up the TPMS units requiring replacement.

I am with Chilli Palmer here. I actually like my run-flat 20" Pirelli's that came with the car. They don't make any noticeable noise and are quite comfortable. In addition to not leaving me stranded in case of a flat tire we are forgetting the fact that run-flats are much safer to drive. In the event of a tire blow out during highway speeds, the run-flats will handle much better and reduce the chances of the car losing control. I'm not a tire expert but that's what I have seen when researching these tires.

whats more costly, replacing a TPMS sensor or a brand new runflat tire?

Rhetorical question.

In Canada we don't use TPMS sensors. The system works with the and system to determine if a tire is low.
