BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Item Interest
Somehow I accidentally ordered two of these, and ecs won't take it back. This is a full 90c thermostat retrofit kit, including temp sensor, bolts and coolant. Super easy swap.

Good way to save your valvestem seals!

Pm me if interested!

Price is 100USD plus shipping (you save $20 over ECS).

Might be interested, I wonder if badblack can chime in on which would be better, his oil valve or this retrofit kit?

An oil valve will not change engine coolant temperatures. The stock 105 thermostat will maintain 105 (or close to it, based on DME input, being that it's a MAP thermostat), regardless of oil temp.

A lower temp thermostat will also bring down oil temps though.

I'm a tech at BMW, by the way.

But in the subject of saving valve stem seals, the valve will suffice right?

Not really worried about coolant temps, my lines/clamps are toast already. So there is no saving them, im sure it's the same case with my stem seals. But I think I can prolong the life if I can get the oil temps down. Ive had oil temps of 250 lately due to this heat wave.

The subject of valve stem seals is a bit touchy in what causes the problem. I've heard oil temps, I've heard the cylinder heads themselves running too hot and thus the guides running hot (which reducing coolant temp would combat), and I've heard it's due to turbo proximity. I've never outright heard anyone from BMW AG give us a concrete reason.

If you aren't yet burning oil or seeing blue tufts on startup, your valve stem seals are still doing their job.

The only downside to a lower temp thermostat is fuel economy. Engines themselves love to be hot (seals and gaskets on he other hand degrade faster with more heat), the hotter they are, the more efficient they run. But I haven't noticed much difference in mine sofar, from 12.7l/100km to 12.9.
