Clean and Tidy - Keep them guessing

For me de-badged at time of ordering... why?

I had seen another 520D the same and it looked very clean...

Since 80%+ of F10's on UK road's are F10's I am in the majority... it could be argued that people that de-badge don't want to be stand out as the minority cheap-skates! Not so in my case....

I do see de-badged 535D's (exhausts tell me) and that also tells me clean lines....

I am perfectly happy having a 520D, less fuel that I have to pay for on a company car!

That said I am human, and am envious when I see a badged 525D+, but I get over it in 0.23 seconds

Just for the record - removing my badge took 3 minutes. One string of dental floss, wiggle it between the car and the badge. You roll your finger on the remaining double stick tape, wipe it with some GooBGone and hit the area with a coat of wax. I see absolutely zero risk to the paint (I work harder on random tar spots and road gunk). It surprised me how easily the badge and tape came off.

I'm really enjoying this thread BTW.

The badges I hate most are the xdrive badges on the sides. Along with the silver side markers, they really detract from the beautiful lines of the car.

Dammit I was going to have my 530d debadged but now everyone will think it's a 520d (maybe I'll just remove the d)

I have ordered my current and past three cars with model deletion after some toe rag took a screw driver to my 520d badge and scratched the car quite badly.

+1 car debadged directly while ordering. Looks much cleaner and it's nobody's else business to know what's under the hood of my car

Let's be honest, in the UK nearly everyone who debadges their BMW does it so that people don't know its the bottom of the range just like I'll leave my 530d badge on so they know its not

It is keeping up appearances in the UK all the time.
Probably half of the badged cars on the Isles are up badged....
Or falsly M-ed.
But who cares, in the same league, the debadged are the better looking cars.

If I summarize this thread, here are the conclusions:

1) In the UK the people who debadge are largely embarrassed to be driving an entry level model, and those with the real thing typically do not debadge.

2) In Europe where society is increasingly communistic and having a few bucks more than the average 35 hour per week manual laborer is considered social exploitation, people often debadge for both cultural reasons. Further some on the continent genuinely believe in minimalism and so a few debadge for optics.

3) The US has a bunch of oddballs who debadge high end models for reasons of aesthetics. However the embarrassment factor in the US of driving a car with a small engine is typically addressed by getting quad exhausts on a 4 cylinder snail powered 528i.

Let's face it. You like to look you are driving an M5. Especially in a state like California where people are totally superficial and what you drive matters.

This pretty much sums it up.

Under the oddball category, I'll also add that I debadged pick-up trucks in the past. So, I removed the Dodge labels off of their Ram trucks long before Chrysler made the corporate decsion to do so.

Yeah Americans are big time into aesthetic mods. So many vehicles not only debadged, but with blacked out tail lights, full blacked out trim, aftermarket wheels, lips, body kits, etc. It's hard to find a 15 year old BMW that is actually authentic any more in the US.

In Europe you can find early 90s Benzs, BMWs, Jags and Lexuses which look the same as the day they rolled of the line (without the model designation badge of course).

I'd summarize: He who cares what people think and needs the affirmation of everyone seeing his model/engine - leaves badge on. He who wants a clean look and doesn't care what people think - debadges.

I bought a 535i because I came from a SC V8 that guzzled massive quantities of premium fuel and cost an arm and a leg to maintain. I also found that most of the time, I couldn't exploit that engine while sitting in DC traffic. For me, my next car was going to be a more modest engine that I could enjoy on a daily basis. Point is, I could have afforded a 550, but chose a 535 because it fits my needs/wants. There is no shame in owning any of the models/engines. BMW makes them because different people have different needs/wants. To assume that everyone wants a 550 and debadges a lower model out of shame is stupid. If I was looking to shave some $ off my monthly payment, I would have bought a 3, 1 or a GTI.

Bottom line - I removed my badge because I think it looks better.

Interesting how many people with debadged cars stress that 'they could have bought a higher spec car but.... they don't need it; they save on tax; etc'

The reality is in the UK you generally debadge to hide your shame;
In Europe you debadge because you feel ashamed that you are driving an expensive car;
and in the US you debadge because you can and you can't help but try to improve on what you are given

Its amazing how people can frame their decision to debadge.

Worst was the CF diffuser with quad tips debaged but an M license plate frame.

This post can make a head spin.

I bought a 550i, I thought about debadging and everyone at the Germany dealership I was buying from thought I was crazy to do so. Since then I had a Hartge ECU installed and asked them to put their emblem balanced on the left side, I like the way it looks, it matches the 550i emblem.

I think people should care less what others think and just do what they like, some serious self confidence issues on display ...

So is there any visual proof of the most cunningly example of debadging around?

Something with a really nice car..

I have proof of the other thing!
My Lada Niva wears all its badges!!!
