Is edc worth it? Can you replace with regular shocks?

So I’ve been looking for a 535 for over a month now. Found one not too far but after checking the vin it has edc suspension. I thought that it’s tied to the drive mode selector (eco, comfort, sport) but others even with the selector have regular suspension. The edc ones cost like $600 each. The car is nice because it’s m sport and has comfort seats, which I like. The act has about 100,000 miles now, not sure if they were changed. If they weren’t would I be able to put if regular ones? I only have bimmercode, could that code it out? Would I lose any of the eco comfort sport ?

If it has EDC….then the driving experience modes probably includes COMFORT+…if you remove and disable EDC, you would lose that mode since there’s no way to adjust the suspension for a softer damping rate than COMFORT.

I wish my 528i only had regular suspension. Sport mode is where it's left for suspension and shift points.

I found someone that can code out edc for $120. Now I’m unsure. I don’t care for comfort+. The x5 has regular suspension and is still nice. I just want to keep the drive modes. The guy that does the coding said I keep those. The car is nice thought, 2012 m sport, with comfort seats and 100,000 miles for $12,500.

I’m curious why you’re wanting to buy a car that has a working adaptive suspension…then spend money removing it. There are other specimens that already have a regular suspension…why not focus on those?

Not only will you lose COMFORT+, you will also lose the the SPORT adaptive suspension parameters as well. The BMWs that have the M-sport pkg but has a standard suspension, the driving experience mode doesn’t change the damping parameters (because there’s no way to adapt the suspension damping with conventional shocks)…but only changes the electronic steering and engine/throttle response. The SPORT display still appears and DRIVETRAIN parameters for sport mode will still be there…but CHASSIS parameters will be limited to the EPS (electronic power steering)…but adaptive damping parameters will NOT be there with standard shocks vs EDC shocks that can adapt through electronic adaptive damping parameters to the shocks.

The 535i M-sport that you mention in the original post…probably will have these 5 selections when going through the driving experience modes since it has EDC:
  • Eco Pro
  • Comfort+
  • Comfort
  • Sport
  • Sport+

+1 seems like a waste. F10 top EDC (Dynamic Drive) on a non-M is beyond rare until you hit G30. Most have the basic drive modes.

Having had 3 F10's now (1 w/o DD + w/ IAS), (1 w/o DD + w/o IAS), and (w/ DD + w/o IAS)

The passive suspension feels like crap compared to EDC (DD). Comfort+ though is a bit too cadillac-y for me though. But if you want the "Sporty all the time" feeling, just get an F10 w/o DD and w/o IAS.

I'll chime in here, having an F10 with all sorts of acronyms. Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF) - Dynamic Drive is worth it.

My 2013 model-year F10 has the electronic damper control (EDC) and the active roll stabilization (ARS) that was sold as a package for my Canadian F10, which I ordered from the factory in 2012. This package notably improves the way our heavy F10s handle in practically all situations that I've encountered. I too dislike Comfort+ (too floaty) and enjoy Sport on occasion. I find that the default Comfort setting, because there is EDC and ARS active all the time, manages most situations with poise and control. Full disclosure - I also have AC Schnitzer springs all around, which are progressive and improve the handling just a bit more.

My F10 now has 120k miles (200k kms) and has just recently developed a very minor leak in the rear active sway bar. It still functions like it should and I have not had to top up the hydraulic fluid (yet). If you find an F10 with dynamic drive, I would not avoid it but rather get it and enjoy it while it lasts!
