Insurance costs..
Afternoon all!
Bit of a lurker who has just purchased a 2014 530D M Sport. Now I have always had cheap insurance (best postcode, max no claims etc) but for some reason I am struggling on the BM. Its coming out around twice the price of a Brand New C-Class Mercedes which seems odd, the only thing I can get out of the insurers is apparently BMW are much higher risk due to crash statistics.. Anyone know of any specialists? I have tried all price comparison sites and individually: Direct Line Aviva BMW Ins Greenlight Need2Insure Adrian Flux Hagerty Swift Cover etc etc The only good "quotes" I have had have been GoSkippy and Debenhams Personal Finance, both run by the same company with the worst reviews I have ever read online for both. So no good! Thanks, Nick |

I sympathise.
Last year I paid £350 for an Audi A7 BiTDi, this year I bought a BMW 535d and the premium went up to £500. Rates have gone up markedly this year due mainly apparently to the 'Ogden Rate', which is the levels of compensation given to accident victims. I found the best rate on Confused.com with HASTINGS DIRECT who seemed very competitive. Also you are comparing a C class Merc with a 5 series - different size of cars and insurance risk? If you have a wife put her on as a named driver, insurance companies seem to like that, |

Have you tried Churchill? If you have two cars there's a decent multicar discount, I think mine was discounted by around £80.
However my insurance was £700 this year as I was an idiot and got caught doing 70 mph in a 40 mph zone (road was empty btw... got caught by an officer with a radar gun on a side road). As a result I now have 9 points as I already had 3! |

Good point about the size of car.. I was obsessing over the value as the C Class is about 17k more than the BM! I need to do an E Class quote to check! - Best so far is Aviva - Second Directline |

I've just bought a 2013 520d and was shocked by my insurance quotes. It was cheaper to insure a brand new jag xf or discovery sport.
Cheapest I could get was with Axa. Also don't assume your wife will make the policy cheaper, it used to but I've taken mine off this year as it put the price up. |

I insure 4 cars with Direct Line, all at same address. Only one to go up significantly in 2016 was the 535d. Still only paying £330-ish though, age mid-40s, safe postcode, no accidents or points.

Paid £600 last year for 530d. Went up to £2700 after a no fault accident. NCb was protected. No points. That was with direct line. Even the sale support guy couldn't figure the massive hike.

I went with Aviva in the end, could have been a lot worse so I was happy in the end. |

Yes it is an issue due to the number of them on the road.
Here is my example - I sold my F10 520d 2013 to buy a new Jaguar F-Pace, then back to F10 535d 2017 (long story) 520d (£40k car)- £430 Jag (£60k car) - £210 535d (£68k car) - £430 although renewal due soon Jag was cheap as it is a new car and not many crashed, although I was told to enjoy the first year! Car insurance is a total lottery sadly

Sure. If it's their fault you are entitled to your losses. This includes the reduction in value of your car because it is damaged-repaired and any increase in premiums you have to pay for as long as you have to pay them. As you have found out, this can be thousands.

Some insurers quotation engines even ask you if you have a dash cam. Obviously if you have a crash, they will request the footage.

Renewal through, upto to £600.
Done the go compare etc, Direct Line, Admiral and this is by far the cheapest. Up from £430 (although this was 520d/F-Pace/535d all in one year.
