Rolling with engine off
I was parked in my garage and wanted to roll my car back a few inches so I'd have room to detail it. Couldn't figure out how to do it without starting and stopping the engine for a second.
Is there any way to get the vehicle out of park and into neutral with the engine off ?? I looked through the manual, and all it says is that the vehicle is automatically engaged in Park when the engine is off.

Check your manual. There is a section on this for those who will need to put there car in neutral when using those car washes that roll your car through.

I did. It says to put the car in Neutral BEFORE shutting the car off.

That won't work though. If your car is in gear and you hit the Start/Stop button, the car automatically moves to Park.

I HATE this. So stupid you can't put the car in Neutral while the engine is off. Inane.

Does pushing the start button without pressing brake (put the car on accessory power) help car to shift into neutral?

Why would anyone use a auto car wash? That is how you get scratches....

Some places are too cold to wash the car with a hose without freezing the water and yourself in the process. If you live up North, you got no choice really.

Here is a reasonably extreme example of why the car doesn't allow movement without you in it; http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/quebec-...-car-1.1294029 |

Last weekend I read the manual by myself for another reason. Is stumbled over a chapter where the transmission is described. What I remember is:
- You can unlock the transmission without the engine running by pushing up the gear lever sack, unclip the plastic part below and using a tool to release the lock. IMO this costs lot's of time and will produce scratches, so this is just for emergency only. - If you put the key fob into the lock, put the car into neutral and than switch off with the start button it STAYS in neutral. I hope I remember it right. It is for a german spec car, but if you ask me it is worth a try... Last edited by itf joegun; 08-07-2013 at 05:25 AM.. |

However, no amount of safety features is going to 100% prevent accidents; but I do agree that this is not a reason to not implement them. The worrying trend is that there is no provision made available to disable these features (if required). The same car sold in a different market has a feature enabled or disabled (depending on how safety conscious the said market is); so it is not that BMW is pushing the safety features, it is also being conscious of the market it sells to. It would be nice if BMW allowed the end customer to enable/ disable these features or let the dealerships enable/disable these features. At the moment, the only way is to code then car yourself...
