M5 clutch in a 550i?

My 30,000 mile 2012 550i 6-speed has been jumping out of 1st gear... or more accurately, not completely engaging 1st gear so BMW CPO is finally going to replace my transmission.

If I hammer on my 6-speed I could get the clutch to slip... especially after a hard launch or a fast shift into 2nd or 3rd gear.

It appears the 550i uses the same clutch as the 335is. That doesn't sound like a whole lot of grip.

Does anybody know if an M5 clutch would bolt up? While the dealership has my car apart I'd be tempted to upgrade it for basically the price of parts.

I anticipate defeating the CDV as well but had to get the 1st Gear issue cleared up first or I'd give CPO another "out".

Thanks!

I don't know, but i don't see why not if the transmission is the same in both the 550 and the M5. I've confirmed that the 550 clutch fits into my 535. So if you're able to confirm the M5 to the 550 that would be amazing news for 535 owners as well. And yeah either mod or delete that CDV asap, its pure garbage and sucks the fun out of driving a manual.

The transmissions are both the same base transmission, GS6-53BZ. But that doesn't mean that the flywheel/clutch setup are the same, the entire clutch assembly could be smaller/larger as long as it fits behind the bellhousing.

All I can find is that the manual 550 uses a 240mm clutch. The M5 I can't find listed anywhere. If you could come across that information you'd have a better shot at finding out.

I thought the transmissions were the same, and I'd think the flywheels on the N63 and S63 could very well be the same... this may work! Thanks for the 240mm information!

Dealership says it won't fit.

Googling around I'm amazed at how little info I can find on F10 clutches or M5 manual clutches... I'm picking at dinosaur bones!

Perhaps!

They quoted me about $2500 to do it with OEM 550i parts.

I'd hate to spend that to repeat mediocrity.

The dual-mass flywheel was $1800 of that.

I wonder if there's a regular flywheel and/or upgraded clutch option for these? I'm fearful that with so few N63 manual transmission cars, I may be stuck with stock. I haven't found any yet.

Some companies say that you cannot resurface dual mass flywheels, but there are shops with specialized equipment that claim they can safely do it. Maybe ask around some local performance shops to see if anyone could do that. That would save you a flywheel.

Regarding the clutch, I didn't see any aftermarket options when I was looking around. But you could talk to some of the specialized clutch companies and tell them the transmission and clutch details and they might be able to make you custom one out of more aggressive material.

Sadly, out of the box it seems like you're stuck. But it's definitely worth looking and asking around when the OEM option is that much.
