F10/11 Focal front speaker install

Where do i start?...
As always i start by thinking it wont be a bad job, and to be honest it wasnt to bad ive only had one trim clip snap on me, schoolboy error on my part though. Be prepared to strip your door if your attempting this setup mind and it wont look pretty heres a pick mid install

but with the help of a Bavsound video to aid stripping the door card off its once again not rocket science, just google f10 door card removal and its there.

Right i have tried to take several pics and i wont go into to much detail for door card removal as the bavsound vid has everything for that area.

first of all you will need to purchase the tweeter housings and plug and play speaker connectors from bmw here are the following part numbers

here are the ordered parts

Size: 168.4 KB

I also purchased, and used may i add a focal k2 component set, glad i did though
I started by mounting the tweeters within the housings, to be fair they didnt fit perfect but then i suppose they are designed for bmws oem offerings, i used a glue gun with hot melt glue to seal them in dont be shy with the glue it wont hurt to fix it securley.
Name: tweet install.jpg
Views: 4239
Size: 140.6 KB
I also had to order the bmw 4" adapter plates due to the speakers being a standard aftermarket 4 bolt fitment and bmws use on 3 securing bolts, adapters as shown
Name: adapter ring 1.jpg
Views: 4464
Size: 265.0 KB

i used stormguard door draft seal 10mm thick sandwiched top and bottom between adapter plates to provide a super snug sealed surface for speaker to sit.
right now its time to watch bavsounds vid, several times! just to be sure about whats got to be done.

Speakers and crossovers waiting to go in there new home

with door card off and hopefully no clips snappedyou can set to work on the wiring this is where some general knowledge of electrics will help, i generally just twisted soldered and heat shrink tubed every connection, PLEASE NOTE>>there is no need to take door card right off just makes more work like bavsound guy says, 'just have everything to hand on car seat and put door card on your lap or a chair like i did.
Name: passenger setup.jpg

make sure you fassen speaker down well as you dont want to be taking door card off again!!
Name: focal glory.jpg

Size: 139.6 KB

once all wired up test everything is working and now your ready to mount the crossover not to many options for placement, i chose bottom corner and it fit like a glove bit of araldite and hot glue around edge and she stuck like sh1t to a blanket.

Size: 120.9 KB

now its door card back on again refer to vid as mentioned and have a cup of tea before tackling drivers door.
pretty much everything is the same as passenger side just make sure to take time and test everything before reassembling

Just for a note,I set focal tweeter crossovers at -2db, i think -3db is preferable but it was a choice between -2 or -4 so i went with -2.
overall seems a really good addition to sounstage, music is alot crisper and it can stay crisp without disstortion to much higher levels than standard setup. Along with my rears, my ears are deffinately thanking me. hope this helps someone and best of luck, any querys please dont hesitate to ask.

1 last cheeky pic

Thanks for this. Doesn't look too bad. I used to to do full ICE installs in my 20's on all my cars but that was 10 years ago so I'm sure I can do this, just needed this sort of DIY to push me in the right direction!

Ha yeah things have changed now, its not a £1500 peugeot 205gti or mk2 golf its a 40k+ motor. I winced at every door clip coming out and several times questioned why i was doing what i was doing. But the end result was worth it. And i actually enjoyed myself like you said i felt 20 again lol

Lol - that's exactly what I was thinking. For me it was a cavalier, then a 206, then a focus then a seat leon - you weren't so worried about ripping them apart.

Haha I used to install too as a weekend venture with my cousin. Had the car apart every weekend doing something or another... Used to install for friends and family too.

Had many set ups but the pinnacle was in my MK2 Golf GTi

2 JBL 1500 GTI subs - 2 1000 watt Kenwood RMS amps
Infinity mids and tops - rear
JBL mid/bass and mid/tops- front
Active crossovers
500 watt kenwood 4 way amp for mids/tops

Could hear my car a mile away, I too am slightly deaf as a result!!

I hear you!

I used to love taking that car apart, would have door panels, seats and carpets out regularly. Running cables, installing sound deadening or upgrading. However I think cars came apart more easily i.e. visible screws to undo stuff rather than the clips they use now. However we didn't have YouTube, it had to be trial and error or a Haynes manual

Or maybe kids have more sense now.... Buying a £4k car and spending £3k on mods wasn't the greatest use of cash!!

Nice install Diesel! I thought about going with another set of K2's in the 5er but probably go Gladen Extremes since it comes with the 8's. With the crossover what differences is there between the -2 and -4 settings? I searched a few Years ago when I first installed it but no luck?

Ha if im brutally honest i couldnt tell, but technic reccomended going with -3db in one of his posts, and since the k2 crossovers dont have a -3db i was caught between the two.

My pretty much untrained ear just thought they sounded fantastic compared to the oem ones so i stuck the door card back on and havent tweeked since.

I have heard the gladen's are very good and have read good things about the 8"underseats, will you need adapter plates for those or do they fit nice and snug?

I'm not sure. From the guys who posted they didn't mention anything about adaptor plates needed but I guess I'll find out when I do it. Love the K2's tho! Some people complain about the tweeters being to bright but just adjusting the EQ and couple DB's they sound ridiculously SWEET! I'm running them on an amp so I'm pushing these at full potential. They come alive with a complete full stage presence. They need power! Are you running an amp or the factory setup? you could timber match and run Focal 8's for the underneath subwoofers but they're pricey. With my 2 12" Kicker CompR's the whole system just comes ALIVE! I'll be working on my system in the F10 here shortly. I just scored on a Meisterschaft exhaust and I still need to get some coilovers so my audio system kinda sits on the bottom of the to-do list LOL!
