Heated Mirrors
When do they come on?
On all of the e46 I had they were on all the time, on the e92 they came on (in various stages) according to all manner of complex criteria; the outside temperature, the wiper frequency and whether the heated rear window was on or not. According to the F10 manual, the heated mirrors are on when the engine is running but that is not the case with mine. Anyone know if outside temperature is taken into account because it hasn't got cold yet although my mirrors were covered in condensation this morning.

Did they clear shortly after you started the car?
I don't know whether they're always on with the engine running or if the heating elements are triggered by ambient temperature, but I've never had a problem with mine. If they're not clearing you have a fault - contact your dealer. |

Simply put Jon, the manual insists that they are heated when the engine is running irrespective of temperature. Can someone confirm for me?

What I mean is can somebody switch on their engine, regardless of outside temp, and then see if the mirror surface is hot after a minute or so?

Well, yes Ian and that was my intention, but are they clearing?
If nobody else here can come up with a definitive answer, I suppose you could breath on them with the engine off, then repeat the exercise with it running and reach a conclusion accordingly I'll be going out later this morning; I'll see if I can feel any warmth on the glass and let you know. |

If the mirror heating comes on then it's noticeably hot to the touch. If you try yours around now and they do not get hot then we can reasonably conclude that it is related to ambient temp and it simply isn't cold enough and mine are working as yours, i.e. correctly.
If yours do get hot, even though it's warm out, then mine are not working.

With BMW's focus on fuel efficiency and squeezing the last tenth of an mpg out wherever possible, I'd be amazed if they weren't linked to external temp and only come on when necessary.

It would seem that they are - as I said, on the e92 they were linked to outside temperature, wiper frequency and whether the HRW was on or not. Even then, they had three stages of heating.
It would be hard to imagine that they would take a backward step and this morning when it was noticeably colder, the mirrors are toasty hot. When the handbook says "the mirrors are heated automatically whenever the engine is running" that is true, it just depends on how one interprets it. I took it to mean the heaters were on permanently but it means the heaters will be on as necessary, i.e. automatically. Anyway, problem solved
