Talking Dual to Quad Tip Conversion

So ... I'm looking to swap out the OEM diffuser on my 535D MSport with the 3D Design carbon fibre diffuser and thought I would look for recommendations from peeps as to their conversion from dual to quad tips. I'm assuming the 3D Diffuser will allow the dual tips to poke through (looking a little naff in the interim) while I wait to do the exhaust/tip conversion

Can you tell me your respective experiences on best conversion - do I need to swap out the rear muffler as well or can I simply get tips to attach, the latter being my preference?

The tips that appeal to me are the double insulated trumpet tips like IE92 had on his original Azzure Blue modded 528 but I can't seem to source them anywhere . Any ideas and or recommendations greatly appreciated .

Hi Jet! When doing dual to quad conversion, you have a number of options, let me list it from the cheapest to the expensive:
- stock mufflers, 550i diffuser, aftermarket quad tips (Cyba Quad, Megan Racing Quad, etc.);
- replace mufflers (Magnaflow, 550, M5 etc.) with the tips at your choice, 550i diffuser;
- replace mufflers, aftermarket diffuser (e.g. M Performance, carbon 3D Design, Vorsteiner etc.);
- replace axleback (550, M550D, Eisenman Street or Race, Supersprint, etc.) and aftermarket diffuser;
- replace catback (maybe get x-pipe instead of the mid-resonator), aftermarket diffuser.

Here is my own project I have done last year: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1049887 Full SS catback ($2.5k) Vorsteiner M5 carbon ($3k) and conversion work ($1k).

As you can see, all depends on preferrable aestetics and your desirable budget. You may decide to get things from ebay or also buy the used ones - this is a good money saver.

The last note. If you will want to use the M5 pieces (diffuser or catback), remember: the tips of M5 are narrower than of any 5-series (see the pic below), so be aware the fitment will need extra work.

Nice! Valbmw u always come in with a lot more info on any topic! hence all the info u gave me regarding diffusers. Is it me or does the 550 have a smaller pipe diameter?

Thank you Well, you're right, it does: referring to the realoem.com, the 550 pipes have clamping bushes on them of D=70MM when the M5 pipes have them of D=80MM.

The idea is simple: when retrofitting the car with an upgrade such as full catback from the senior model or even the aftermarket one, it comes with larger pipes and lesser resistance, also it is normally lighter. So you save 10-15 kg of weight and gain 5-10 bhp (plus aestetics) at the cost of $3-4k (not to forget another bill for some carbon chunks).

If changing exhaust tips only, this is only for better look, but some find it sufficient.

Ha ha, yes 528's have their OEM exhaust on the left side but I do get your point JKSH. Nice exhaust mod as you could never tell by looking at it from standing angle

Thanks Val. Comprehensive summary and great input. It's the 3D Design I'm going for and at this stage I'm really only looking to throw on a couple of tips (I do like DiMisa) to fill the void and give her rear end a bit of attitood. Is that simple conversion possible?

You're welcome! This is very reasonable and good looking conversion. Some friends of mine did exactly that way, please check the pics below. Note: the most important things is to align the tips properly, as shown:

Thanks Val. BTW, what diffuser is this and where can I get it as it's a single fin and I thought this was a Vorsteiner and would only fit the M5? Note the single fin on the White and Black non-M5's here versus the twin fin Vorsteiner diffuser on the Blue F10 which is the only one on their website for M Sport (i.e. non-M5). I was about to pull the trigger on a 3D Design but this single fin is the one I'd prefer as it's more aggressive and I find the twin fin possibly too much.

Diffuser on the white car is OEM M5 painted gloss black.
Tips are Dimisa, custom fitment to M5.

Diffusers on the black car is 3D Design M5 carbon, just have a look:
http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=846544
http://ind-distribution.com/ind/bran...-rear-diffuser
http://www.precision-sport.com/shop-...-rear-diffuser
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/eur...ce/8372034754/
http://www.trinityautosport.com/desi...ser-p-616.html
Tips are Dimisa, too, with custom fitment to M5.

And the last one... wait! you are showing me my own car's ass
This is Vorsteiner M5 (and the car is actually carbon black)
http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1049887

You can see, all these sexy diffusers with big and cambered side wings and the large and single middle part are for M5. The diffusers for 5-series are more flat and need to be linked to a plastic shield which is attached to the "spare weel" niche with 3 bolts. M5 diffuser are bolt-on without any screens.

The M5 diffuser is much better looking but also has one problem: the tips should sit closer to the centre, like 2" each side:

Name:  DSC_0165_zpsh3rmvxpc.jpg
Views: 10275
Size:  262.4 KB

Therefore the shape of the tips piping might be not "Y" but "Ч" (your exhaust shop tech will check it out and decide):

Name:  DT-24153L&R(1).jpg
Views: 14410
Size:  203.6 KB

This custom fitment is totally doable and is not very difficult for a proper tech, believe me.
My own fitment story was different because I've got the full Supersprint catback so adjustment exercise was more difficult.

Sorry Remmib. No pics until I get the mods I want completed - diffuser, exhaust, and shoes to go yet. I need to save my pennies for the rims I want as they are hovering around AUD$12,000

Well, I didn't really care about the acoustic aspect of it. This sound is the normal sound of the BMW inline six turbodiesel engine, and that's it. I know many amazing examples of garage art made to turn on the "bimmer fellaz" on the block. But I believe, an adult male gets the sound of V8 by buying the V8.

BTW Audi made "Audi Active Sound" as a great example of smart business responding to the specific market demand ("Making tailpipe music", "No more silent running"):

Thanks Val. Very informative. If I've read correctly, each of the images I referred to that you've commented on are all of non-M5's that are modded with M5-style diffusers and exhaust tips to suit (always thought I needed to fit M5 fenders to fit the M5 diffuser). Sooo, sounds like I can do either of the following to my MSport 535:

- install any MSport style diffuser (such as 3D Design MSport, Vorsteiner M Sport Aero, etc) and install 'Y' style tips; or
- install an M5 style diffuser (such as OEM M5, Vorsteiner M5, etc) and instal 'Ч' style tips.

Let me know if I have that wrong. BTW, the ass on your ride is sensational. Gives me goosies lookin at it.

Cool ) Yes, all these cars are with the different versions of M5 diffusers because of better aestetics. Meaning each owner faced the 2" issue )) Let me show you some more details, just to make you a bit more into this business.

The white 535d has (if I remember it right) a custom catback exhaust with M5 mufflers and Dimisa tips, OEM M5 diffuser painted: https://e-a.d-cd.net/fc6e9d4s-960.jpg

My car has factory catback Supersprint, Vorsteiner Aero M5 diff and the tech did perfect job bending the pipes so that 5-series catback got adjusted to M5 diffuser.

Finally, you are right with the two options. This is the most simple way, without need to have the pipes bended or the mufflers modified for the "||" tips.
