535 and 550 exhausts interchangeable??
Just curious if anybody knows the pipe diameter for the stock 535 and 550 exhaust pipes? The layout looks identical to me from the mid section back and wanted to know if my 535 Supersprint exhaust would fit a 550.

Alan did you ever get an answer? I think the 535i pipes as slightly smaller diameter but any muffler shop can mate them to the slighly larger 550i using a custom pipe fitting/connector which they will weld in. Alot of folks seem to have done it without problems. Also I recall Eissenman's 535i exhaust being interchangeable with 550i according to some previous posts.

Yes, the pipe diameter (aft of the axle) of the 550i is 70mm (2-3/4") and 65mm (tad over 2 1/2") for the stock 535i. The muffler shop simply makes a connector sleeve to mate between the factory 550i pipe and the Supersprint muffler inlet...It'll hook up as the routing is similar and muffler hangers are in the same location. Assuming the Supersprint inlet is 2 1/2", I suppose the reduction in inlet diameter of the Supersprint might be thought of as a restriction (in theory) but I think the big V8 will not even notice it. If you do it, please us know how it goes!

Confirm...the OEM piping IS 70mm but suffers from some major crushing, fore of the mid resonator and aft of it just as its transitioning past the muffler toward the muffler. In fact, that crush is almost 50% when I looked and what absolutely stumped me was why the factory did it. It does not appear to be a clearance issue for the RWD
550i. Perhaps they made it to accommodate the AWD chassis. Nevertheless, the piping is 70mm but as mentioned, suffers from several major crush points. Conspiracy theory: Perhaps the crush (along with smaller turbos and convoluted induction) was intended to further diminish the horsepower potential of the N63 V8? keep it from creeping up in too close to the power output to its big brother M5 S63 V8? Hmmm. BTW...Alan, 450HP? I'm confused by your signature. Is your F10 a 535i or 550? |

My 535 Supersprint exhaust does have the center mid pipe section but i am not going to use it because i don't want to limit that much of the piping. I am just going to basically reuse the mufflers for the 550 so section where it is reduced is gong to be very very short (12" at most) Alan
