electrical burning smell from engine
Went into my garage today after driving around some and smelled a strong smell of an electrical burning smell. Turns out it was coming from somewhere in my car engine. Can't be good...probably going to take it to a shop asap but thought it couldn't hurt to see if anyone here has experienced this or has any thoughts on the matter.

Electrical, or acrid, odors would have likely led to a fault or ground by now. Especially if you would describe it as strong.
My suggestion would be to pull the engine cover and inspect the clamps and hoses for cooling to the turbos. They are known to fail and begin to leak, and are easily replaced with a more durable hose clamp by even the most novice mechanic. While not acrid, coolant on a hot engine block or on the turbo housing itself would lead to a pretty peculiar smell, and I could see mistaking them if you weren't sure. There is a DIY post for this very issue. Good luck! |

thanks I'll try to find that DIY post. The smell of an electrical component shorting out and burning is very distinct and that's what I smelled, but that being said I don't know what burnt coolant smells like so I guess it could be possible.
definitely didn't smell like a burnt plastic bag. I drove the car today and no engine warning or performance issues... |

A little late to the game but it sounds like your coolant lines coming off the turbo are leaking. It's pretty common on the n63's and smells a lot like an electrical fire.

I had the exact same problem, same smell I noticed in my garage and when checking under the hood. My car is in the shop now and it was diagnosed as the cooling lines to the turbo that need to be replaced.

I didn't used my car for 4 weeks and smelled like rotten eggs. The reason was misfiring coil. Got it replaced and it ran fine for a month until another one did it. Replaced that one and one more went a month later. The mechanic charged $200 each to replace them. Third time when I faced similar situation I talked to a guy at yourmechanic and he told me replace the spring inside the rubber tube of the coil for $6. It came with a replacement tube and spring. He replaced it in 15 minutes and the problem is solved.
